Answered Question on activation when moving abroad

OK, here's my question: I just bought Windows 7 Home Premium and installed it successfully, no issues with the activation at all. However, I'm currently living in Latin America but I'm moving to Germany very soon. The Windows that was available is one of those regionally restricted Windows versions. Now, if I have to re-install Windows being in Germany, and provided that the very first activation occured in Latin America, will I have problems with the activation abroad?

Regionally restricted versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 may only be distributed in specific locations. These regional versions must be activated in the region for which the product was intended. More info: Windows by region

I know that, I've read all about it, but since I'm moving to Europe, a re-activation in Latin America will hardly be an option for me. Plus those regional editions were the only thing that stores in Costa Rica even offer.

    Hello Richie D.,

I read this page http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/vista/VistaByRegionQualifyInfo.aspx?displaylang=en&cCode=USA&sGuid=f08d1365-762f-41cc-ad1b-2b60bd18f74e as saying that, if you have one of those regionally restricted licenses for Vista (and I would assume this applies to Win 7 too) and you move out of the region, they have a plan for that:

    1.  You run the analyzer on your system, which spits out a report.  Presumably the report verifies that your installed Windows is genuine.

    2.  Then you send that report and your existing region-specific Windows materials to Microsoft.

    3.  They send you a WGA kit as a replacement.  They don't seem to specify whether the replacement is specific to just your new region, or if it is good worldwide.

Thanks for the link. I had a look at it, and it seems that it does indeed only apply for Windows Vista (for which I don't even have a regionally restricted version of it). Plus the address format they use just doesn't allow me to enter a Costa Rican PO Box address. I find it shocking that Microsoft doesn't offer those who legally bought one of their products a much more convenient option to continue to use their already installed and activated regionally restricted products when the person moves outside of that region.

    Hello Richie D.,

I would think that the same would apply to Windows 7 if it is being distributed regionally like Vista was.

Why not contact Microsoft customer service and ask them directly?
