Change Product Key Message (In Error): Win 7
-
giovedì 3 maggio 2012 20:25
I get this message (in "Title") in Windows 7 64-bit, Control Panel, System, Activation, following the Product ID. It developed after changing my Windows drive (c:) after cloning from a SATA 2 to a SATA 3 SSD. Windows is shown as "Activated," & the program Speccy (also Belarc Advisor) shows the exact activation code that came with my original purchase of Win 7 Ult (full retail, not upgrade). This product key ID has never been used on another machine, although I've made significant change to the hardware since the retail ver. of Win 7 was 1st released & purchased (including mobos & switching from an Intel 1156 system to Sandy Bridge --1155)--but any such activation issues were previously corrected without this error message. Obviously I cannot literally change the Product Key (as opposed to the PID--which was the original error message after the cloning) without entering a false key.
Is this any real issue I should be concerned about in terms of it potentially affecting OS performance???
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )Once saved, run the tool.Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report. To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.- **in your own thread**, pleasePlease also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

From the OP<quote>It developed after changing my Windows drive (c:) after cloning from a SATA 2 to a SATA 3 SSD.</quote>It appears that the change is in the interface, not the hardware.

I agree. It does sound like it might be a clone from one SSD to a new one.
rlross52, could you provide more details?
Thank you,

venerdì 4 maggio 2012 01:03PostatoreI think Carey's link is probably right. I think the SATA 2 is probably an HDD. Not many folks are upgrading one SSD to another due to the expense for the capacity gained or the speed gained. Hopefully the OP will clarify because the phrase can read either way.

No reply from the Original Poster.
I assume the link Carey provided resolved the issue.

Sorry for the delay here folks--got tied up with other matters & had some trouble finding the original post.
The cloning WAS from a SATA2 SSD (OCZ Vertex 2 120GB) to a SATA3 SSD (Kingston HyperX 120GB).
I can't find the original sticker: this is a DIY machine & I can't readily find the box. If it helps, this was the 1st retail (non-upgrade--extra $100) version of Win 7 Ultimate with an invoice date of 10/23/2009. I used the 64-bit disk. There's never been an issue as to the product's authenticity.
For reasons unknown, the original "Change" message was for the Product ID, not the Product Key.

There appear to be no problems in your report - the only 'odd' thing is that the Key is showing only the last five characters, rather than the usual last three blocks (I assume this was by manual editing?)
Are you still getting a non-genuine notification of any kind?

Noel
You're correct: I manually deleted the Product Key #s prior to the last block.
Other than the message noted under "System" in Control Panel, the message "Windows is activated" is shown directly above the "Change" message," & there's no other indication that the OS is "non-genuine."
Thanks for your help--at the least, I wanted to rule out any likely complications: which I believe you are indicating is the case.

Ah - that 'Change Product Key' link!
That's present where an installation uses anything other than an OEM_SLP, - and it should appear even then, if self-activation of the OEM_SLP Key fails for any reason.
