    Hi,

I ordered an Electronic Download copy of Win 7 Pro 32bit on the 12/12/2009 and promptly installed it the next day.
It activated fine and I have been using it ever since; but this morning I turned on my computer and received "This copy of Windows is not genuine" rigmarole.

I don't really want to re-install but it looks as though I may have to

    Thanks in advance,
    Thomas Goff

I have currently tried: (To no avail)
     # Using my old product key and receiving a "0x8007000d : The data is invalid. " error

     # Activating by phone, but once I get past the region selection screen I get a "0x8007000d : The data is invalid. " error again and no installation ID

" The Licensing Data section of the Diagnostic Report isn't showing correct information.  This usually indicates that Windows 7's Licensing Store may be corrupt or unreadable.  Try the below steps to recreate the Store.

    1) Open an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop sppsvc    (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection servive may not be running, this is ok.
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start sppsvc
    10) Type: slui.exe
    11) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically."
but I still get a "0x8007000d : The data is invalid. " error

    Hi Thomas,

Windows Product Key appears to be good.
I'm not seeing any Tampers or other Non-Genuine inducing problems.
The Licensing Data section of the report is, indeed, showing non-standard/incorrect information

Your diagnosis is the same as mine would have been and you did exactly as I would have suggested.

I can think of only two other things you might try.  A System Scan and/or a System Restore.

The System Scan will look for bad Windows files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.

    1)    Login to Vista in Normal Mode

    2)    Launch an Internet Browser

    3)    Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field

    4)    Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe

    5)    Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'

    6)    In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow

    7)    Reboot twice and see if that resolves the issue.

If that didn't work, try a System Restore to go back to a point before the issue occured.

    1)    Reboot Vista into Safe Mode

    2)    Click the ‘Start’ button

    3)    In the Start Search field, type: System Restore and hit “Enter” keyboard key

    4)    Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.

    5)    Click the "Next" button.

    6)    Reboot back into Normal mode

One last thing, I noticed that you said you bought and installed Windows around Dec 12th, 2009.  That would mean that you are still within the 90 days of free technical support that is included with a Retail copy of Windows.  So, if none of my suggestions resolved the issue, you may try contacting Windows 7 phone support at http://support.microsoft.com.

    Hope that helps,
    Darin MS

    Hi Darin,

I knew there was something else I did, I'd already run a "sfc /scannow " I just couldn't think of it at the time of the post. That didn't find anything and it was still a problem after the 2 reboots.

Bugger, I'm still living in the past and keep forgeting that System restore exists.

It's a bit late now; I had a few spare days up my sleeve and figured my PC could do with a format and this gave me a fairly good reason.
So I did a complete wipe and reinstall, it activated fine and is now running along smoothly. At least I know a reinstall fixes the problem.

You learn something new everyday; I didn't now you got 90 days of free Tech support (I've never had a problem that I couldn't fix, with a little help from the internet)

    Thanks for your help,
    Thomas
