bought Windows from ebay--is this genuine?

I want to see if this can be checked. I bought Windows 7 on eBay and received a burned DVD and a key. It was certified genuine when I installed it, but this week declared itself not genuine. I tried uninstalling KB971033 and rearming, and it declared itself genuine again.
I contacted the seller and they said they worked with MSFT tech support and determined that I must have got a "false positive". They sent me a replacement key, which I haven't used yet.
Darin Smith, can you check whether this was an MSDN copy? I also have the replacement key they sent me that I could e-mail you to check--haven't used it yet. I'm going to ask them to send me proof that it's a copy they have the legitimate right to sell. Otherwise I'll try to get a refund through ebay.
First and last time I ever buy software on ebay. I guess it's not safe, even if they have 100% positive feedback.

That 231 is consistant with MSDN home premium MSDN/technet keys, this was no false positive. By all means, do not install and depend on that second key, the seller just wants to push your dispute out past the 45 days, or long enough to disapear.
File your claim today but by all means wait for Darin's confirmation first but do not wait past today. I only use anectdotal evedince to spot these keys and he has way cool MS supplied tools to check them (but, every key reported here in the 065-067 range for ultimate, 230-231 for premium and 220 for pro have turned out to be blocked MSDN keys).
I installed all three major flavors using my TN keys to compare PID's and they were also consistant with these ranges.

Hi lexington04,
This is not a False Positive
I have checked the Product Key being used in your copy of Windows and unfortunatly it has, in fact, been Blocked. The Key is from an MSDN Subscription Account that either has been broken into and the key was stolen and is now being sold or the subscription owner is selling their own key (which is against the Licensing Terms for Product keys from an MSDN Subsciption).
Carl_OH is absolutely right, the seller has already tried to pawn off a bad key on you. The additional fact that he gave you a Burned DVD (I assume he didn't supply the required Certificate of Authenticity either) I have no faith that the "new" key, he gave you, would be any better. If he still says it's a false positive, point him to this thread.
I recommend moving forward with your Dispute. Return the Non-Genuine Key and Software, for a full refund.
Thank you,
Darin MS- Contrassegnato come risposta Darin Smith MSOwner martedì 13 aprile 2010 20:48

"Burned DVD?" You shouldn't even need to ask whether or not it's
legitimate. It isn't.

I knew from the item listing that it was going to come on a burned DVD. Aren't you able to buy Windows as a download from Microsoft's site and then burn the iso? I thought that's what I was getting.
Anyway, thank you for the help! I already got my refund from them through ebay.
Another question: I'm going to buy a new boxed copy from Best Buy. Do I need to reinstall now, or can I just enter the new key that comes with the boxed copy? And is there a way to get that KB971033 install now that I've already hidden it in Windows Update?
Thanks!

Hello lexington04,
As a matter of fact the ONLY place you as a regular consumer can make a legitimate electronic purchase of Windows 7 is directly from Microsoft. Digital delivery of these purchases happens thru their sales partner Digital River. Microsoft and Digital River DO NOT sell on eBay, period.
Your best option is to backup and offload your data, then do a clean installation (repartition and reformat) of Windows 7 onto your computer. Microsoft research shows that over half of the unauthorized downloadable .isos of Microsoft products have malware, viruses, and other unwanted code embedded within the iso. Get that potential cesspool off your computer by doing a clean installation :-)
