Windows 7 OEM Key Blocked
-
martedì 13 aprile 2010 07:35
I purchased Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OEM on 10/30/2009 - from a well known retailer - it is legit with the plastic case and the CoA sticker. It installed and activated with no issues. On 4/12/2010 the desktop turned solid black with message in the lower right corner - Windows 7 Build 7600 - This copy of windows is not genuine. Attempts to reactivate the key results with error message "This product key is blocked by Microsoft".
I contacted MS Support - several attempts to resolve the issue ( System Restore, slmgr script to rebuild the licensing files ) did not help. I asked for details and the support tech stated that a Windows Update corrupted my OS. If that is the case then a reinstall of Windows 7 should fix the issue - which it did not. The support tech then said they would call back tomorrow and provide another key.
Can anyone provide details on this? Why is my key blocked from activation? What could of happened that compromised my license key?
Thanks for your time reading this.
EDIT: Below is my Diag Report. Please be aware it is now a fresh Windows 7 install currently in the 30 day grace period. Also worth mentioning that this is a custom build machine. I purchased the parts and OEM software from the same vendor.

Type SLUI 4 in the search box, select country or region and call that number, do not press any menu buttons, wait for a real person to answer, attempt to activate by phone, if needed, explain the situation to the person. They may not be able to activate it, please be understanding if that is the case, if it does not activate and they give you any additional information post it here.
Darin from MS can check your key if phone activation fails.

Thank you for the reply Carl. Yes, I already attempted a phone activation and spoke with an MS rep. They are investigating the issue ( details are in the OP above ).
That would be great if Darin can check the product key and provide more details on why the key is blocked by MS. This installation was genuine since Nov 2009.

Hi Ant2030,
Yes, this is a Blocked key. Unfortunatly, my tool doesn't tell me why the key was blocked. I should, however, be able to find out, if you can provide me some additional information.
For OEM System Builder software, the disk would have come in a paper or cardboard sleeve along with a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) that has the Product key printed on it and all of this would have been shrink wraped togeather. If this is how your software came, then take a picture of the Certificate of Authenticity (that shows the Product Key) and send it to me at wga11 @ hotmail .com (remove the spaces). I will then take the picture and escalate to the Product key group for information about the key block.
NOTE: The reason I have asked you to send the picture to a Hotmail account is because a) there is no way to post the picture on the forum without the whole world being able to see it (and product key it contains) and b) If I post my Microsoft email address in the forum, I will end up getting a metric ton of spam.
Thank you,

Thank you for taking the time to look into this Darin. Here is an update -
MS Support called me back today and informed me they could not unblock the key - however they provided me with a new key and I was able to reactivate Windows with the Change Product Key option. The support tech was unable to provide details on the reason for the block.
While the issue is now resolved, I'm still left wondering why my key was blocked after nearly six months of usage.
The OEM software was packaged as you described. I will email you pictures of the CoA as you requested, along with details of the vendor and the Case ID from MS Support for reference.

Thank you Ant2030,
Just to set your expectations, I may not have any better luck in getting you an answer then the Support Rep, but I will try.
Thanks,

Hi Ant2030,
Unfortunatly I was unable to get any additional information on why the key was blocked. The core reason I asked you to send me the COA Sticker was to see if I couldn't get the key Unblocked but since Support issued you a new key, that is unnecessary.
On a side note, I recommend running the Diagnostic Tool on the Windows using the new key. I am sure it's Genuine, but what I want you to look at is the "Windows License Type:" line. Your old Product key was OEM System Builder licensed. OEM keys are limited in a few ways versus Retail Licensed keys. The two main differences are 1) OEM Licenses don't qualify for free support period and 2) the OEM Product key/Software is tied to the first computer it is installed on. This means if you get a new computer, you can't move the OEM Windows software to the new computer.
The reason I wanted you to look at the "Windows License Type:" for the new key is I suspect that support issued you a Retail key. If they did, then you came out ahead in the deal because you should now qualify for 90 days (I think it's 90 days) of free tech support thru Microsoft and you would be able to move that software/key to other computers, as much as you want (as long as it's installed on only one computer at a time).
Sorry I coudn't be more help, but I'm glad your issue is, at least, resolved.
