MS Security Essentials keeps requiring validation.  When I run the validation online it always comes back as valid.

This is a relatively new problem.  I have been running this Windows XP Professional for several years without incident.

What other Anti-Virus programs have EVER been installed on this machine, since the last reformat/reinstall?

This installation appears to be an Upgrade (presumably from Home to Pro?)

There don't appear to be any issues in the report - so I would assume that the problem is that of lack of communication, which is often caused by residues from earlier AV's (especially Norton or McAfee).

I think that it was upgraded to Pro which I received as a gift several years ago.

I had tried several anti-virus programs; but, have been running Security Essentials for better than a year and only recently started getting the validation kick-back.

Didn't happen today when I logged on.  Knock on wood!  I always check for updates on the definitions, even though it runs a check every evening.  The problem occurs when I start Security Essentials to do that update.

I may try doing a smoking sage exorcism!

    Thanks anyway!

A slightly more reproducible method (rather than sage exorcisms) of clearing things up is to run the removal tools for all the previous AV's - then uninstall and reinstall MSE.

AV's are notoroius for leaving large chunks of stuff lying around in both the file system and the registry - and sometimes this has no effect until moths or years later when something else needs access and is blocked.

Running the removal tools clears out (almost) all the dross and gives the new one a chance to do its job properly.

I've seen systems brought to their knees by the residues of Norton pretty much start jumping for joy once it's properly removed (the owners were even happier!).

    Thanks Noel,

Norton probably came with the computer.  Didn't like it.  Tried System Mechanics = major overload!

I guess I can find the removal tools online?  I'll give that a try.

    Thanks again.

Total rubbish - it's still available. What DID happen was that the version offered changed. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Noel is correct, MSE is still officially available for Windows XP 32bit and I personally don't think that will change anytime soon.

    Thank you,

    Thanks Noel,

I'll try those; although, the warnings have not popped up for the last 3 days.

FWIW, MSE is still available for XP 32-bit - I suspect it will remain available until XP goes out of support in 2014 (what will happen after that is anyone's guess!)

No - I do not work for Microsoft, or any of its contractors.
