sabato 3 marzo 2007 14:23Can browsing or editing be done from the desktop? I assume it can but have not installed software to do so. If so, are there any guidelines for types, sizes etc for installing on the server? I have Adobe Photoshop; it is a very large program which requires significant resources. Would this be satisfactory? I hesitate to load the server with extraneous software.

sabato 3 marzo 2007 15:39ModeratoreI'm not sure what you're trying to do. You can browse the shares on WHS from any home PC. They're just network shares exposed as e.g. \\server\Photos. Image editing software shouldn't be installed on the server; WHS isn't intended for use as a regular workstation. You can edit images that are stored on the server from (once again) any home PC.

domenica 4 marzo 2007 03:08I suppose I was a bit confused. None of the desktop icons were placed on my three machines.
I have gone to the "add network drives" , it does not discover the sever in the browse section and is forcing me to enter a subfolder beyond "\\server. It results in several icons on the desktop for the various subfolders on the server. I will work to solve that.
This is just a minor irritation at the moment.
Beyond that, all of the file and manipulation of the photos works with the .exe file not residing on the server as you suggested.
I am attempting to operate with the server as advertised. However, in the interim (Beta program) I am keeping secure BUs on other machines and drives. Will Synctoy work to provide incremental BUs? -

The only desktop icon that was created on my home PCs was one titled "Shared Folders on Server" which is a shortcut to \\server. Was that not also created on your client PCs? Or are you saying that you're having name resolution issues on your home network?
As for data on the server, you shouldn't put the only copy of any irreplaceable data on WHS beta. That's just common sense. It's a beta product. Microsoft will have done all they can to prevent data corruption, but they can't make any promises.
SyncToy is a tool that I use to keep various folders in sync. I've got a job set up that syncs family photos to the server once a week, and a couple of others as well. I don't use it for backups. For that, I use ntbackup (primary backup) and now WHS. I like WHS better.

mercoledì 7 marzo 2007 00:12Ken, sorry it has taken me a couple of days to follow up.
I have three clients: desktop (XP Pro,wired), Dell laptop (XP Pro, wireless) and a Toshiba (XP media edition, wireless). The desktop icon did not appear on any of the clients but I was able to manually add them without any problem.
No, I don't have any irreplaceable data on the server but I wanted to keep it as up to date with my working files as possible.
I have always used Synctoy as the backup vehicle for all the files on the "real system."
I like WHS better as well. I will be glad for the RTM version so I can quit the stilted procedures I use to keep two copies of everything.

Have you installed the connector software on each of the client machines?
It can be found in \\server\Software
