Intermittent WiFi connection on home system
- I am using a Pharos Traveler 619, with WM Professional 6.1. My home WiFI is a dLink, which I have running, with WAP security, requiring a network key to access the WiFi.
I have no problem with my notebook, or two iPod Touch devices accessing the WiFi in the house, but this phone sometimes sees it, soometimes doesn't, it allowed me to connect for a couple of days , but now it keeps reporting the WiFi as unavailable, and cannot connect. Everytime I do try connect, it keeps making me enter all the network information again, and even though I give it all the same selections as before, when it did work, and the correct, case-sensitive network key, it keeps showing it as unavailable.
Any help in sorting this out would be appreciated, as I would prefer not to use all my data allotment up on the internet, while at home with a perfectly fgood WiFi running.

... I did try the unplug the router trick, I entered the settings a few times and all of a sudden for no reason it is running.

Is there a "wish list" thread somewhere, if not I would like to start one. There is so much available for free, or at 1/2 to 1/4 of the WM prices at the Apple app store an iPhone looks tempting.
You can post "wish list" in the Suggestion Box area of the forums. The Windows Mobile team does look there.

I think I would consider the wifi issue resolved, it seems to be related to the powering down to save battery, and the wifi shutting down. While typing this the phone went to sleep, when I woke it up, the whole thing takes place again, tried re-connecting, no luck, pulled the power on the router, reconnected, and it reconnected by itself.

- The next time that happens, try turning off the power to the router, count to 5, then power back up. Now try connecting with your device and I bet you will be able to connect. (Make sure the laptop and iPods are not connected when you try to reconnect with your device)

I have only been dabbling in WM for a bit over a week, but I think I am going to enjoy it.
Wish I could sync all my Thunderbird contacts witht he device, as we quit using Outlook at work.

I think you will enjoy it ... I do, that is why I still use Windows Mobile (and why I try to help others when they need some assistance).

http://www.WindowsMobile.com/TotalAccess- OK, I am back, I just got the replacement phone yesterday, and have been experiencing the same issue as raised before. it will connect to the wifi router, and lets me get on the internet. It seems like once the screen shuts off to save power, it has a hard time finding the connection again. I tried unplugging the router power for 5 seconds and plugging it back it, but that made no difference. Now it shows my wifi as unavailable, and won't connect at all. I know the signal is good, and I am quyite close to the router, the network key is correct, and in the proper case. I am using WPA-PSK authentication, TKIP encryption, the network key seems to be save when I get to that screen, does it need to be re-entered each time? I just tried it with re-entering, and it connected, not sure for how long though.
The other problem is the wifi sees a signal from a neighbour's wifi, and it keeps trying to use that one as well, which is no good as I have not got the network key. - Noel, you marked your last post as "answered" ... not sure why. Is it solved for you?
As for showing your neighbor's WiFi, it will see it as available. You can go into Setting /WiFi and see it on the list. If you press on it, you will see a list of available options, one of which is to Remove Settings. It should delete it from the list. However, it will probably reappear the next time but I do not think it will connect. Unfortunately I can't test that right now because I only have my own network available ... there are no others around.

The wifi connection on the new phone is better than the original one, but it still is intermittent. It seems to be related to the screen turning off to save power, when it turns back on the connection has been dropped. Sometimes it will find it all by itself, sometimes I have to make it reconnect, and sometimes when I do that, it takes me through the whole set up process again, requiring me to select WAP, TSIK, and enter the network key.
One other strange thing, when doing that the network is filled in, all *****, and it is 3 more characters than the actual key. It seems to help to delete them and re-enter the key. Good thing I finally have it memorized, I have typed it in so many times. - Hi Noel,

In my case, if that happens it will NOT accept it and I have to turn my Router off then on. Then it connects!
BTW, if you find a FREE hotspot, can you connect without issue?

http://www.WindowsMobile.com/TotalAccess - It appears the first phone I had did have a defect. After replacing it with a new one in exchange, I have found this problem is not quite as prevalent. I have been away from home and the wifi there that keeps needing me to re-enter the info, so I haven't had a chance to experiment with powering down the router. However while traveling europe last week, when I was around free wifi services, the device seemed to find them without problems.

http://www.mobilitysite.com - I was on the phone manufacturer's website, and saw a note in their forum about an update for my phone, which was to fix a speaker issue, and an unidentified wi-fi issue. I downloaded it to the phone, and will see what happens. Wi-fi connectivity with the replacement phone has been much better, so the first phone was probably faulty.
I will advise if this OS update has made any difference when I get a chance to check it out. - An update, of sorts. I did download the update I mentioned. it screwed up my GPS, which caused me to have to do a hard reset, and lose all my settings. Got the GPS back, got the wifi working at home, most of the time,it just went through the nonsense described earlier, I did try the unplug the router trick, I entered the settings a few times and all of a sudden for no reason it is running.
It still refuses to see an open wifi running in the office, every device I have with wifi, such as my Ipod Touch and notebook, and my netbook jump on it, no problems, this phone does not see it at all, even if I type in the name and force it. Bizarre.
On my wish list for the next version of Windows Mobile, a wifi that finds wifi, and just asks for the network key if it is secure like my Touch does. I also have a wifi finder app (free) which is great for sniffing out every wifi in the neighbourhood. WM 6.1, not so much.
One other item on the WM next version shopping list, a calculator that can be used in scientific mode, just as every version of Windows PC had right back to the copy of Windows 2 I had.
