OEM/COA SLP Full Version Key and Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade OEM Media, both from Dell

    質問

  • I expect one of two answers to my question: You can't do that, get the proper install media and do it right - or - Phone activation will suffice.

The scenario/question on a friends laptop-

Dell laptop purchased from Best Buy that BB claimed to come with the already created restore discs.  Bring it home, no install discs, discs had already been created once, so couldn't do it again.  Back to BB, they 'create' restore discs again.  Months later, someone decides to put ultimate on, hoses the installation most likely due to using a bad key and poor judgment - in comes the restore discs created by the shaved monkey squad.  Discs are an epic fail for the restore, destroys restore partition which would have been useful for me, along with the MBR - I checked the discs, I assume they just directly imaged the encrypted NTFS restore partition without the use of the proper software, which is bootable and starts the install process, but just vomits useless data on to the HDD.  My friend calls and asks me to fix this POS, and here I am.

I realize I can make said friend order restore discs from Dell, was just trying to get things up and running.  The laptop has a completely valid COA attached to the bottom for windows 7 home premium from Dell, no install media.  I have windows 7 home premium upgrade media, also from Dell.  After sorting out HDD issues with partitions etc., the upgrade goes smooth, windows 7 HP installs, drivers...  Then comes the validation - obviously a failure or I wouldn't be here.  Case and point, I used Dell OEM Win7HP upgrade media and a Dell Win7HP OEM SLP Key, is there a method to make this work, or do I need to have friend sit on his thumbs while he waits for Dell to send restore discs?

  • Sorry about the confusion - I think I was going word-blind! :(

    To your problem....

The 'bitness' of an installation is unimportant, as far as activation is concerned, but changing it will mean that telephone activation is required.

I can see no other reason for a failure to activate over the internet.

    telephone activation (operator calls)
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit
    the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you
require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator
to respond, who can deal with you

  • This is my first post, ever, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.  If there is a thread already explaining this, I would greatly appreciate a link.

Hmm - OK - this may be a different computer to the other one? In which case sorry about my other comment, and I'll remove it.

You should contact Dell, and request a set of Recovery disks for that machine, and use those for the reinstall.
Having said that - you presumably used the disks from the other PC you posted about?
Those disks should probably work fine apart from a few driver problems.
Please post an MGADiag report for this machine.

  • Here's the MGADiag.  Also, I failed to mention in the original post, the COA on the laptop is for 64bit Win7HP, the upgrade disc was for 32bit Win7HP.  Not sure about the 'other PC' I posted about, This is my very first post here, ever, since the dawn of time, never ever ever have I posted on these forums until this question, right here, right now.  If you are referring to the install media, yes, I had a win7HP upgrade disc from another Dell PC that I used to install win7HP on to the Dell laptop in question using the laptops product key/COA, and not the product key from the upgrade - I had made the assumption that the upgrade would accept a full version OEM key from the same vendor, now I know better =).

I will most likely have my friend order replacement restore discs anyway, just lending a helping hand.
