    Hello there!

    I just have to check out the prerequisites to implement a testing environment for a large company and in every part of the documentation about OCS2007 I find a CA a prerequisite/requirement for the installation.

    Since the company didn't have a CA yet and the only features that are being tested are file sharing and application sharing via the Communicator the question arises to me: are certificates needed at all (in case a non encrypted communication is ok)?

    In the old LiveCommunication Server2005 certificates were optional but not mandatory. Is there a way to configure OCS2007 to work without certificates too?

      What I've read so far is that Instant Messaging is no longer supported over TCP and now needs to use TLS so you do need certificates for that (and for external 3rd party authentication). I don't think you need to have a Microsoft CA installed. You can use other platforms or use Verisign etc

        Assuming you are running on an SE with no server to server communication required (i.e. Edge, Director, multiple FE) you could use TCP, port 5060, without a certificate. However, I do not believe you will be able to use the MCUs so your functionality will be limited to IMs and peer to peer communications.

          As far as I have experienced it is not possible to complete a SE installation without a certificate. At step 6 the "Office Comunninications Server 2007 Public Beta Deployment Wizards" says "Not available: Deploy Server must be completed and a certificate must be installed before you can start services."

           

          Any workaround?

            You can install certificate authority and issue your own certificates. Simple and no cost.
