I understand the need for certificates in the OCS infrastructure for my production deployment (or my pilot deployment into my production domain), but is there a way to not use certificates in a test environment?

Exchange 2007 uses self-signed certificates, and I would hope there would be an option to do the same thing for OCS.

If you have a cert server installed in your environment, that works great - that makes life even easier since you have no cost involved and a single root cert works for everyone. Starting with 2005sp1 a web cert is basically what is used. I would guess you could use a self-signing cert tool as well, but you would then need to install every cert on every box and every client where it accessed the machine...kind of cumbersome in a multiple-box environemnt. For the PIC, public certs are required since every provider must trust you natively (although GoDaddy $20 certs work just fine and can hold SANs if needed).
