This bothers me because you are the second person that seems to having similar issues.

Do me a favor and outline what you have done.  What device are you using? Is it an upgraded PC or did it come with Vista?  Have you been able to establish a partnership?  Does your computer recognize that there is a device plugged in?  Anything that might give me a better idea to help you out.

Count me as the third. Motorola Q with fresh Vista install on a Dell Latitude D810. Tried all the tricks including disabling advanced networking features on the phone. I get eventID 6, source RapiMgr.  Here's a log:

I have the same issue as well.  My device is a Palm 700wx phone.  I'm connecting with USB to a Dell Latitude D620 with Vista Ultimate.  Vista was installed as an upgrade.

I installed the latest version of WMDC without any issues.  WMDC always says "not connected". There are no errors reported on the WMDC screen.  The event log, has the error: "Windows Mobile-based USB device is plugged in but is unable to make a network connection to the desktop."   I've tried disabling all vpn drivers and the windows firewall without success.

I'm updating my previous post here as I got the WMDC to work once when I enabled the ActiveSync option on the Windows Live One Care firewall.  It only worked for that one session.  I cannot put together what was different for that session.

I've uninstalled and re-installed v 6.1 of WMDC twice now; have done the same with the drivers; I've tried turning off all firewalls; removing USB hubs; checked to ensure all required services are running; re-started the mobile device OS .... nothing works.  When the phone is plugged in I see a message about the driver loading, it says it loads successfully and the driver appears as running correctly in Device Manager.  WMDC starts it has a message saying "Not Connected" - no errors; no diagnostics - that's all.

I've gone through all suggestions in the article above - 2 hours of effort.

    Really frustrating stuff.

    Hi,

I had exactly the same issues however spent more than two hours on the resolution.  The previous post talking to the pocketpcmag url fixed the issue.  WM5 Settings - Connections - Usb to PC - uncheck the "Enable advanced network functionality".  Disconnect device and connect back up.  Recognized it immediately and actually listed my Treo 750 as a SmartPhone USB Sync.

    Hope you get it working.

P.S.  I did disable my MS Firewall temporarily to eliminate it from causing any issues.  There are changes that are needed for the WMDC.

Doing this did not work for me. I have a Dell Axim X51v. This happens periodically. The only way I've been able to resolve is back up all my data on my PDA, do a hard reset, then spend the afternoon reinstalling all my software and restoring my data.

Add me to the list. Dell Axim x51. Dell Dimension 3000.

Windows Mobile-based USB device is plugged in but is unable to make a network connection to the desktop.

I have tried all the steps in the first url. no resolution. furthermore I have tested that all the hardware is working properly. I also checked the device on another computer (running Vista Home Premium Upgrade) and it worked just fine (was a dell dimension 9500). tested an HP PDA on the computer with problems and it also could not connect.

Would reinstalling the OS (again) provide a resolution? The only change we have made from the first time we upgraded this machine to vista and having to reload the OS is we installed more memory. I even got to the point where I took the new memory out just for kicks. I am pulling my hair out.

    Thanks,

    (sorry for my english)

I had the same issue with Acer N311 (Windows Mobile 5.0, ROM version 1.0.16) and Vista Home Premium (russian versions).

I could see new device - "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter" in Device Manager, but PocketPC still "not connected" in WMDC.  And there was an error in Application Log - "Windows Mobile-based USB device is plugged in but is unable to make a network connection to the desktop".

(And in this version of PocketPC ROM there was not "Usb to PC" settings in "WM5 Settings" - "Connections".)

After that I have update the ROM version from 1.00.16 to 1.00.24  - and, it works.

Now, i have  "Microsoft USB sync" in Device Manager (instead of "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter"), and now I have  "Usb to PC" settings in "WM5 Settings" - "Connections".

I never did get a USB connection working. I was successful getting a blue tooth connection going.  It is fine for most things.  When I have large files I end up moving them to the phone via an SD card.

I Searched high and low...dowloaded...uninstalled...reinstalled...updated...cursed Vista and the fact that I upgraded. But then... the final search lead me to this solution...and worked immediately. Microsoft, ATT and HP (in  my case) owe YOU a paycheck for keeping me as a now satisfied customer. I can't thank you enough.

I ran into this, I am using Windows Firewall, with no other 3rd party firewalls installed. After numerous uninstalls, re-installs of wmdc, I happened to check windows firewall's exception list. There were aound 25 repeat entries in there for wmdSync.exe. It looked like this -

    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4001
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4001
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4001
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4002
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4002
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4002
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4002
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4003
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4003
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4003
    ...

I also had an "empty" entry at the top that was from a program called bitlord. I did the following -

    uninstalled wmdc again

I deleted the empty firewall exception entry

deleted all the sync exceptions in the firewall

disabled the firewall and closed the control panel to it

    installed wmdc 6.1

connected the phone and was able to setup the partnership and sync (yeah!)

    disconnect the phone

    re-enabled the firewall

    everything works now.

In the exception list I now have just two entries for wmdSync.exe -

    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4001
    @%systemroot%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe,-4001

You all might take a look at your exception list to see if you have the same problem.

Just as an FYI - I had this same problem, windows mobile 6.1, vista ultimate. Tried several options with no luck... The following worked:

    1. Removed any reference from both Mobile Synch Center and my phone's active synch settings.

    2. Ran regedit and found 2 entries under the following key:

     - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Tombstone

They appeared to be references to my devices (my old phone and the current phone). Until I removed these items and then rebooted my system nothing I tried work. I'm not quite sure what the tombstone registry entry is for but it seemed as though removing the devices from my system via mobile synch didn't actually clear them.

I have not verified this as I have it working now and don't want to go back to pulling my hair out, but if the same steps work for someone else and save them a few hairs then all the better.

This is a workaround for this problem.
After a lot of changes i realize that the problem is with the Windows Portable Device. I am using a Windows Server 2008 as my workstation. When a lot  of people try to troubleshoot this problem, they always talked about this driver but this is not showed under W2k8 Server.
I have a W2k8 Server 32 bits with no problem at all where Portable Device is not showed, the problem is in my other pc with W2k8 Server 64 bits where Portable Device is not showed too.

So, what i did is forcing the OS to install the Windows Portable Device Driver doing this:
    - Server Manager
    - Device Manager
    - Add Legacy hardware
    - Browse my computer for driver software
    - Let me pick from a list of device drivers in my computer
    - Select Windows Mobile-base device (look up for the "-". If you dont have it that means that you dont have the last version of WMDC)
    - And Next
    - Finally, Connect your device and restart the PC. Be careful; "Advanced Network functionality" must be enabled.

You will notice that the WMDC will work after the restart with some hicups like:
    - You will lose the connection when you disconnect the device. Reconnecting is not a solution. You have to logof and login again
    - This only works with Professional devices. WM Standard Edition devices wont work.
    - The icon of your device won't show correctly when you change the device.
    - You can "update driver" of the Windows Portable Device that you added in order to see that the name of your device is showed. If you dont do this, you will see the name of the first device that you connect.
    - Disabling "Advanced networking funcionality" will make this workaround fail.

In conclusion, i think there is a service that is not working fine handling the discovery of the WM device. Definitively, this is not a problem of Windows Firewall or any Antivirus.  The solution for this is to diagnose the service in charge of auto discovery the device.

This never happened to me in other OS, just in this Win2k8 Server 64 bits.

    hey guys,
i suddenly started having this problem as well, i have vista x64 enterprise, been using it with my htc diamond for ages (a year?) with no problems that i can remember, then suddenly seemingly out of the blue my phone stopped syncing via USB a couple of days ago, and in eventvwr i was getting the "Windows Mobile-based USB device is plugged in but is unable to make a network connection to the desktop".

i was a bad scientist and didn't really try things in isolation to fix it, but here's a basic overview of what i did to get it working again (in the hope it might help someone).

    - start -> programs -> Activesync -> menu -> connections... -> untick the "synchronise all PCs using this connetion: usb" option
    - soft reset, at this point i left it for a few days but i dont think it matters
    - start -> settings -> connections -> usb to pc -> untick advanced network mode (still not working at this point)
    - probably soft reset
    - turn advanced network mode on again
    - on the computer, delete the partnership (still not working)
    - soft reset
    - connect the device, and go into device manager on the computer, under "network adapters", there is a device "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter #2", might be slightly different for you.  right click it and uninstall
    - unplug the phone from the computer, and plug it in again, let the drivers install.
    - unplug the phone
    - start -> programs -> Activesync -> menu -> connections... -> tick the "synchronise all PCs using this connetion: usb" option
    - plug it back in, worked.

as you may have noticed, right at the top i unticked the allow sync over USB on the phone, and at the bottom i ticked it again.  so probably somewhere inbetween was the actual fix, but to be honest i forgot that i had unticked that option, so it could have been anything.

    good luck :)

A few weeks back the WMDC on my Vista Ultimate laptop essentially terminated a year and a half old partnership with my Axim X51v.  It deleted all of my files from the Axim -- my Calendar and Tasks events remained, as did my Contacts -- ended the sync session, and I've been unable to get them to connect since.  I get no error messages.  The PC knows that there's been a USB device added or removed when I place the device on the cradle or take it off -- the added device/removed device tones can be heard, but the connection is never made.  The partnership remained in the Sync Center and WMDC -- until I deleted it in a failed troubleshooting attempt -- but the devices refused to connect and sync.

The Dell version of WM5 does not include the often referred to "USB to PC" icon in the on the Settings/Connections tab, so there's no way to toggle the Advanced Network Mode selection, although I suspect that option would work, if available, since an Axim X50v with WM3SE will immediately connect with WMDC on my PC and offer to allow a partnership to be created, while no WM5 (I've attempted with both the original device and another X51v) device will even attempt to connect with WMDC.  Both X51v devices will connect normally and offer to set up a new partnership with another Vista PC in the house, so this conflict exists, it would appear, specifically between my laptop and WM5 devices.

Neither a soft nor a hard reset of the Axims has any effect.

Deleting the Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter and forcing it to reinstall has no effect.

Reinstalling the Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 Update had no effect

Changing to a different sync cradle or cable makes no difference . . . unless it happens to be connected to a different PC.

    Here's what worked for me...

    Background:
I have a Dell Axim x51v with Windows Mobile 5.  Over the last year, maybe more, I had intermittent sync problems (reminding me of the old Palm OS SUDS -"Suddenly USB Doesn't Sync" error for any of you that go back that far).  It was getting worse, and I tried several voodoo solutions like plugging the USB cable into different USB ports on my Vista Business laptop with seemingly some success.  The Axim almost always still synced with my home PC running Windows XP (and ActiveSync 4.5.0 build 5096).  Then it just stopped syncing at the end of May 2009...period.  Neither computer synced.  I could hear the connection 2-tone sound when the USB cable connected, but nothing happened afterwards.  I noticed the "Windows Mobile-based USB device is plugged in but is unable to...blah blah blah" error in the Vista Business laptop's Event Log and that led me to this forum and several websites referenced in this forum.  I tried all of the options that I could--Windows Mobile 5 doesn't have the option to change the connection protocol (USB to PC) like Mobile 6.x does.

For a brief period, I did get it working again after doing two things.  I can't tell which one, or if both worked because I did them at the same time, but I first uninstalled every damn Microsoft Live / Windows Live software application, service, etc., that I could find on my Vista laptop (that's one of the remedies recommended for this problem).  I also had a Windows Vista update queued up to install.  After doing that (and rebooting), my Axim would sync again and things seemed to fine for about a week (give or take a week).

Today I tried the WDRM trick on my SD Card to no avail.  Then I tried deleting the Windows Mobile Remote Adapter driver, plugging in the PDA, and Vista recognized that needed to be installed.  It did, I rebooted and nothing was fixed.

Then I tried the Aliens II maneuver, taking off and nuking the site from orbit--doing a hard reset of the Axim.  That didn't work until I also tried to see if there were any Windows Updates available while my PDA was connected.  There was an update from May 2007 for the Microsoft Windows Mobile Adapter (driverid = 20060042).  After I intalled that (and I think rebooted), it worked.   As a side note, my laptop's Vista / Microsoft Office and other software is up to date on all patches from Microsoft except for the optional Windows Live stuff (ha ha), and a Samsung printer driver that I don't need.

I just tried rebooting the laptop again and the synchronization still works.  Hope this info helps you out if you're reading this and trying to figure out what to do next.

Now to restore all of the programs, themes, browser favorites, etc., I used to have on my PDA.  Ugh.
