回答の候補Windows Mobile Device Center Host has stopped working and Outlook

    Hi,
I have been following the discussions about this problem with WMDC and unfortunately the suggestions to correct don't fix the problem.  I have an HP4150 operating on Windows Mobile 2003 (version 1.10) and it connects to my laptop a Toshiba Satellite running Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.  Previoulsy I had no problems synching my Pocket PC to the Laptop and synching my data from Outlook 2007.  Recently all that happens now is that the Pocket PC connects to the laptop starts to synch and then WMDC comes up with an error message 'Windows Mobile Device Center Host has stopped working' and then it goes in a loop trying to find a solution. That said, the Pocket PC is connected for I can look at the files through Explorer etc

I currently have WMDC version 6.1.  As suggested by others I have deleted the partnership and reinstated it to no effect.

What I have done when establishing a new partnership is not select any of the Outlook items and only chose mobile favourites from Internet Explorer.  When I do this it synchs fine and the favourites appear on the Pocket PC and WMDC keeps running and you can use it to look at your Pocket PC.  It's only when you select Outlook items that it crashes.

I run Trend Micro Internet Security and thinking that it might be a firewall thing I stopped it from running but WMDC still crashes.  Just before it crashes the Outlook icon appears as a system icon on the bottom right hand side of the task bar so WMDC is trying to open Outlook to synch but something is stopping it from completing the task and it crashes.

Like many others this problem is frustrating me and from what I have seen on the forums has been going on for some time and as such I would have thought by now that Microsoft would have provided either a fix or some advice on what might be causing the problem.

Is there any kind soul out there who can help me?

    Regards.

I don't have a Vista computer but two things I'd suggest you do to address the issue you describe are to run SCANPST on your Outlook database to correct any potential issues with the database and run Office Diagnostics to address any potential issues with your Outlook software (assuming these options are still applicable under Vista):

To run SCANPST, you'll need to find the utility program first and then locate where your Outlook.PST file is. I find these files on my PC in the following places:

    SCANPST.exe is in the \Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033 subdirectory and

    Outlook.pst file is in C:\Documents and Settings\Julie\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

You can also search for these files. If you search for the files, be sure you use the advanced search features and select the options to search hidden files and system files.

When you locate your Outlook.PST file, write down the full path to this file.

    Then close Outlook
    Select SCANPST.exe
This will bring up a dialogue box

Input the entire path and pst file name in the dialogue box.

    Press the Start button

You may need to run SCANPST a few times to allow the utility to work through all the issues in your PST file.

    To run Office Diagnostics:

Open up Outlook on your computer, select Help > Office Diagnostics

Please let us know how it goes.

    Hi Prof Julie,

Thank you for responding so quickly.  As you suggested I have checked the Outlook PST file and it found errors that were corrected.  I then ran the Office Diagnostics and it found no errors.  Hoping all was well I then deleted the partnership from WMDC and then connected up the Pocket PC.  Vista then installed the Pocket PC and I selected all the Outlook items to synch.  It started to synch and then I got the same message as before that WDMC Host has stopped working.  Went through the same process as before with it trying to find a solution and then it closed down.  Once again the Outlook Icon was in the system tray.

Any other advice to fix this would be appreciated.

    Regards,

The next thing I'd recommend is that you rename the PIM.VOL file on the windows mobile device.  The PIM.VOL file can be found in the device's root directory - if you use the mobile version of File Explorer to the find the file, it will not show the extension.  When PIM.VOL file contains all your Outlook related data, so when you rename the file, the data disappears - if you open up contacts, appointments or tasks, there will be no data there.  The device recreates a new PIM.VOL file that is empty.

After renaming the old PIM.VOL file, delete your existing partnership and set a new one up and then see if you can sync.

If that does not work, you'll probably need to perform a hard reset, but at the same time also delete WMDC from your computer, redownload WMDC from Microsoft's website and then reinstall it to your computer.  See the section entitled, "Resolving Windows Mobile Device Center partnership and syncing problems," in this article for more information about this approach: Syncing to a Vista Computer

    Hi Prof Julie,

Have done what you suggested.  I could not find any PIM.VOL on my pocket PC but then again my Pocket PC doesn't have any contacts, email, calendar etc.  Lost all of these a while ago doing a previous hard reset.

Hard reset the Pocket PC, deleted the partnership from WMDC and then uninstalled it from the computer, read through the article and did a cold start to the computer aftet the uninstal.  Downloaded a fresh copy of WMDC V6.1 and installed it.  When it finished I connected the Pocket PC.  Went through the process of setting up a partnership and this time I only selected contacts to synch.  It then tried to synch and once again all I received was that 'WMDC Host has stopped working' which I have to cancel out of the program and it crashed.

This is becoming very frustrating so I am going to try it on another computer running XP and Activesync 4.5 to see if it works.  If it works then I know its Vista.  Will advise you.

    Regards.

I could not find any PIM.VOL on my pocket PC but then again my Pocket PC doesn't have any contacts, email, calendar etc.
Even though you have not added any new Contacts etc since the hard reset, the PIM.VOL will be there.  It is located in the ROOT directory of your device.  Open File Explorer and navigate to My Device.  If you scroll down, you will see a file called "pim".  That is the file you are looking for.  Now follow Prof Julie's instructions.

    Hi Jack,
Thanks for you advice but I there is no PIM.VOL on my HP4150 - now after a hard reset or before.  I have used both the Pocket PC file manager as well as Windows Explorer from the computer to try and find this file.  I ensured that all hidden files can be seem and I even searched the Pocket PC using wild cards - but nothing found.

Waiting to get on to the kids computer to check it under XP and using Activesync 4.5

    Regards.

    Hi Prof Julie & Jack,
I connected the Pocket PC to my kids XP computer and successfully synch'd it using Activesync 4.5 .  I only select contacts and they were transferred from Outlook 2007 over to the Pocket PC.  Tried looking for the allusive PIM.VOL once again and cannot find it so I don't know where it is.  Tried the My Device 'root' directory and then even did a wildcard search using Windows Explorer from the computer but to no avail.

So it appears that Vista SP2/Windows Mobile Device Centre 6.1/Outlook 2007 combined with Windows Mobile 2003 don't want to talk together.  Any other suggestions?  If not then please advise me and I'll close this thread as a lost cause.

    Regards.

Okay, I went back and see that you are using an IPAQ h4150, which runs windows mobile 2003 on it, so there wouldn't be a PIM.Vol file on your device (I didn't remember that when I suggested you delete the PIM.Vol file).  That version of windows mobile uses a different organizational scheme in regards to contacts, appointments, and tasks.

By the sounds of it, there does seem to be an issue with your computer.  I wonder if you could perform a system restore to the computer to a time prior to the start of the syncing problems.

    Hi Prof Julie & Jack,
Well that resolves one issue - so I'm not going mad about the PIM.VOL  :-)

System restore is of no use as I only have the last eight days of restore points to chose from.

    Hi,

Connect your device and open Task Manager on your computer. Do you see one or more wmplayer.exe processes running? If yes, kill these processes to see if your device sync.

    Let us know.

    Hi Linley,

Sorry - no such process is operating when WMDC flashes up and then crashes.

    Hi,

The problem of synching using WMDC still exists.  The only thing it does synch is Mobile Favourites.  Every time I selectany of the Outlook 2007 items it crashes.

For information, I connected my IPOD Nano to the computer yesterday and it synch'd with no problems using Itunes and Outlook 2007.  If Apple programs can work with Vista/Outlook 2007 then surely Microsoft products should be able to work in their own environment.

Surely there must be some way to capture what is happening in the background during the synching process with Vista/WMDC/Windows Mobile 2003/Outlook 2007.  It use to work fine about six months ago and apart from the routine (excessive) Microsoft updates and security updates I hardly install any programs on my computer.  I don't even play games on it.

    Hi,

Can anyone help provide me with an answer to what stops WMDC synching my Pocket PC to Outlook 2007.  As I have advised before the synching works fine for mobile favourites and when I synch my Ipod Nano but when I select any of the Outlook 2007 items in WMDC it opens Outlook as a small icon on the taskbar bottom right hand side of the screen and then crashes.  Somethin in Vista or another program running in the background won't allow the synch to happen.

    Regards.

Unfortunately I don't have a 2003 device with me to test it out Misty58.  I'm not quite sure what to suggest without playing around with one first to see if I can see something.  The fact that you have a partnership and are able to select and sync favorites but nothing else baffles me.

So if you were to select only TASKS, will it crash?

I have been having the same problem. My device hasn't been able to sync since mid-May. I have done a repair on Outlook and on WMDC. I am hesitant to do a hard reset and lose my data from the last 1.5 months since there is no backup at this point!

I too started having this problem around the same time. Using Vista/WMDC v6.1.6965/Outlook 2002/iPaq hw6955. Interestingly there were a couple of Windows Updates, MS Office Compatibility Pack and Security Update for 2007 MS Office in mid May. I'm in the process of trying to connect via Bluetooth but can't even establish a partnership at this point. iPaq indicates it is connected but WMDC will not respond. Tries to connect (with all the normal connecting tones) but instantly goes to "Not connected". Then, every once in awile out of the blue, it will connect and sync. Very frustrating as this seems to have been initiated by MS updates. I had sync'd fine for a year and a half  before this fiasco.

    Hi Jack,

It sure baffles me as well.  If I select any of Outlook 2007 items in WMDC the program will crash.

What I can't understand is that I can sync Outlook 2007 Contacts, Calendar and Notes with my Ipod but WDMC (which is Microsoft) to my Pocket PC (which is Microsoft).  After looking over most of the questions ecently raised on this site it would seem that a lot of problems with WMDC and synching started to occur when Microsoft released Vista SP2 as well as Office 2007 Service Pack.

    Hi DJE2,

I sympathise with your frustration.  Noting what you and MrGeller have said once again I feel that I'm not going mad at all and it is something that Microsoft have done to their updates.  If you find out how to fix it please tell the world.

    Regards.

    Hi

I'm also having the exact same problem. My phone (HTC Touch Pro) is setup to sync with my work computer over the exchange which works perfectly. My computer at work runs windows XP. Now i'm at home and my laptop runs Vista Business with Office 2003 (can't stand office 2007), and when I try to get it to sync with my home computer i get a message box that pops up to say outlooks has encountered a problem and needs to be closed, outlooks closes (even when it's not been open) and then I just get a message to say sync failed. No reason for it, just failed. I checked my calender and it has pulled across some info but not all of it. It is setup to do the last 2 weeks and all future appointments but even some of the future appointments are missing.

Any help/tips would be gratefully received.

    Hi all,

I was having an issue with my Dell Axim v51 under Windows 7 (Virtualised with Sun Virtual Box) and recently the machine and the PDA stopped recognising each other.  I ran a Repair of the Windows Device Centre in the control panel, and presto it is now talking again.  Maybe something to try.

    Hi Michael

I can't find a repair option in my control panel, can you tell me where I need to go to locate this? I've upgraded my office to 2007 and the issue is still there although now it just says sync error and doesn't actually say what the error is.
