    Can someone please confirm if you start an IM with external users involved that you won't be able to archive the conversation. If this is true is there a third party program that will?

      Can you define 'external users' in your context? Externalyl connected corporate users, federated users, or public IM users?

      Archiving can be enabled for 'Internal' conversations which can be internal<->internal and internal<>external authenticated Communicator clients.  It can also be enabled for Federation which would include conversations between anyone in the company and any Federated partners (either specifically allowed or using Open Federation).

        Looking to archive messages between corporate users and public IM users. Can this be done with OCS R2 archiving or is there a third party tool that can do this?

          OCS (2005, 2007 and R2) can do this directly. There is no problem archiving messages between corporate and public IM users.

          If you just enable archiving globally, you'll capture all conversations with external  users, whether federated or PIC. If you configure archiving per user, each user in your organization has 2 flags controlling archiving, Internal and External. If External is set then every conversation that user has with an external party will be archived.
