CRM2011 (Office 365 Platform): Can you call a WCF Service (non-Azure) from a Plugin?

According to this http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/crmdevelopment/thread/27085665-9e82-4e97-9ae2-13683cddb45e it seems it is not possible to create a plugin that can successfully consume/call a WCF service...because CRM Online can only host a plugin in isolation. While I've seen some examples that show it is possible, none of them mention whether they are online or on-premise.
So? Has anyone done so successfully?
If not, can anyone provide a good resource for creating/calling a non-WCF web service from a CRM Online plugin?
Optional Background Reading: I am struggling to connect directly to Exchange server from a CRM Online plugin. So, I'm wondering if building an intermediary web service will be a work around. Instead of going CRM --> Exchange, I can try to go CRM --> WCF Service --> Exchange?

Hi,
you can consume non WCF webservice in plugin, but you need to make sure this
Just you need to make sure you webservice should be deployed on ports 80 or 443
