File originally created in Project 2007, have been updating for weeks.  Now for some reason I cannot expand nor collapse tasks with the "pointer".  It was working yesterday, but not today!  Any clues anyone?  Thanks

    Hi,

You must have the "Summary Task" filter active. Reset to "No Filter"

    Lisa,

It sounds like you have a view refresh issue - if you can see the expand/collapse box for a summary task you can obviously see Summary Tasks in the view, tobe doubly sure no filter is in force press F3 to apply the "No Filter" option.

Try switching views, for example to the Network Diagram view and then back to the Gantt Chart and see if the expand/collapse box works.

I have seen something like this in the past, other factors that could be having an influence include having "blank rows" to distinguish between phases or stages of your project and having a Summary Task that summarises the entire project at Outline Level 1, the "Project Summary" check box on the "Format" ribbon is a better way to realise this requirement in the displaying of a schedule.

    Hope this helps

    Dom

I  have the same problem. Project 2010. It has worked fine on this machine for 6 months, then all of the sudden last week I cannot expand or collapse a summary task using the +/- beside the task.

I can go to the left side and click on the row ID and it will expand and collapse as exected. It is like a differenct behavior has been assigned to my pointer (like in a drawing or map program whether it selects or become a hand and moves the picture). I can also use the Show tasks and go to a specific level and that works as expected. Everything works except the +/-.

Show summary tasks is definately not the problem - I and turn that on and off and it behaves as expected. Its not a refresh issue - I changed the view and same behavior. Its not just for the Gaant either - I can open a Resource Usage view and I see hte same behavior. I can even create a new plan with just a few lines to test with and get the same behavior, so it is not a specific plan with a problem.

I have no idea! Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

    Charles,

Try saving the file as XML and then re-opening from the XML. Maybe your file got corrupted.

I tried your suggestion but no luck. It happens for all project files, new and old. I can create a new project with 3 lines, make one summary and consistently re-create the bahavior. I can also send these project files to others and they work fine for them.

    Charles,

If someone else logs on to your computer, does the project file work as expected?  If someone else logs in and it works fine, you may have a corrupted user profile.  I too started having problems with Project acting unexpectedly.  When I logged on with another profile, all worked well.  I had to create a new user profile and it appears to have fixed the problem.

Let us know.  Also -- are you working with a Project Server connection or stand - alone?  Are you using the standard "blank" template to create the new files or perhaps another template?

Is the issue only in 2007 created files or does it occur in new project files directly created in 2010?

I am using project standard. I will have someone else log on and try another profile, but I am going on PTO this week (YEAH!) and will not be able to test that until I get back. I think I will try that and if that doesn't work, I will try to remove the app and do a clean install. This is a corporate machine and I don't have admin rights, so it makes it a challenge to do anything.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will report back my results as soon as I can test it.

Enjoy your time off and let us know how things go when you have a chance to test the other login.

I am back from PTO and before I could retest, some changes occured. The biggest was a security patch from Microsoft was pushed out by IT and reboots required, etc. Long story short, the issue has magically gone away now, so I was not able to thorough test for the actual solution to the problem. I had not uninstalled/reinstalled, so while that might have resolved the problem, it was not the fix in my case. I am not aware of the exact Windows 7 patch deployed by IT, but it apparently patches a high risk vulnerability as it was pushed out quickly.

Thanks to all for your assistance.

Thanks very much for the update, Charles.  I'm glad to hear the issue has resolved itself.

I was having the same issue.  Tried all of the suggestions to no avail.  Rebooting my laptop seems to have done the trick.
