    Howdy,

This will be a pretty long post but I want to make sure I cover all the relevant information.

I bought an HTC Touch a month ago to replace my iPaq 2490.  Everything about it works great except for the desktop passthrough feature that lets me connect to the internet when cradled to my PC.

With my iPaq, I could plus it into the cradle, open up Internet Explorer on my device, and surf to any website.  I also had an application that would download RSS feeds to my device when connected.  Both of these features no longer work.  I travel a lot which is why the RSS program I have is so useful to me.

The error I get when trying to use IE to connect is this:  "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost.  Check the connection and try again".

The funny thing about the problem is while connected to the cradle, I can check my POP3 email accounts without any problem.  It also connects and updates my weather plugin, so there is an active connection, it just doesn't seem to work through Internet Explorer.  The only problem I seem to be having is anything that uses IE to connect to the internet fails.

I've downloaded the Opera Mobile browser and when I use that I am able to connect to any website when cradled.  Unfortunately all the RSS programs I know of use IE and therefore still cannot connect to update my feeds.

I don't believe it's Activesync related because if I unhook my HTC and plug in my old iPaq, the desktop passthrough works perfectly.  I'm thinking it must be some setting for IE, but I can't find it anywhere.

I've done everything I've read from various posts on the net, such as:
    - Changed connection type from "Automatic" to "Work Network" in Activesync
    - Added the AllowLSP registry setting recommended to fix a similiar problem
    - Tried it on Windows Vista with WMDC without any success.
    - Tried it at home without any firewall
    - Unchecked "Enable advanced network functionality" in the USB to PC setting on the device.
    - Uninstalled Activesync and reinstalled from scratch
    - Done a hard reset of my device twice.

If I connect via GPRS or Wifi the connection works, however I need it to be able to work when plugged into my computer. If you have any suggestions as to how to get PocketIE to work when cradled, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks

    J

Did you change the connection settings so it uses WORK rather than ISP?

I have a similar problem on my MWG Atom Life. I MAY have found a work around - it seems to work so far!

The symptoms of my problem were that I'd do a hard reset and reinstall, all would be well on my data connection then it would suddenly stop working with the "connection was lost" message. I suspected that an ip or dns address was getting left somewhere in the machine, and I found a program called vxUtil on http://www.cam.com that seemed to confirm this - the (disconnnected) WLAN adapter had an ip address. I used another program from the same site, vxIPCONFIG which allowed me to release the ip address on the WLAN adapter and the data connection came back to life instantly.

    Hope this helps.

    Andy

this is the first time i've posted to a messageboard.  i'm doing so because i want to thank those of you who are willing to share your expertise.  andy, your fix worked perfectly and there's no way i could have come up with that on my own.

i managed to get opera up and running on my verizon vx6800 thanks to this post:

unfortunately, it caused explorer to quit.

andy's fix did the trick. both browsers are now fully operational.

    thanks guys.

Many thanks for the vxIPconfig lead.    I just ran into this problem with my new xperia and this fixed it!
Do you know what causes this?

    Dear Andy,
i've tried the vx program at my mio a501 but there was no change at the massage a get from my explorer "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost.  Check the connection and try again".  neither i can download anything from any other program although the connection with my server(dsl via wifi) or the GPRS has been establisted.

Do you have any other sugestions?

    Thank you for your time.
