Laptop says my product key is invalid

    Vraag

  • I have a laptop issued by Microsoft from PDC 2009.  Recently, this laptop is complaining that the product key is invalid.  Can someone tell me what the issue here is?  Obviously the key is valid.

  • This computer shipped without the appropriate SLP marker. Look on the bottom side of your computer, there should be a COA sticker with a product key (DO NOT POST THE KEY), insure that the product description on the sticker matches the version of windows installed. If it does then you can do either of the following.

    1. See if the manufacturer has an updated bios that supports windows 7. Carefully follow the manufacturers instructions on flashing the bios or have a technician flash the bios for you. flashing the bios can render your computer useless if not done properly of if you have a power failure during the flash.

    -OR-

        2.   Activate by phone using the key on the sticker found on the back, bottom side of the computer (possibly in the battery compartment on laptops). Navigate to system properties through the control panel or press pause break, scroll to the bottom of the properties page, select change product key, insert key, select activate by phone. You must activate by phone. If you do not activate after inserting the key you can activate by doing the following.

    Activate by phone

    1. Type "slui 4" in the start menu search box, hit enter

    2. Select country or region

    3. Dial the number, DO NOT select any menu options, just wait and a person will pick up.

    4. activate by phone.

  • I ended up having to activate by phone.  I just wonder why it became unactivated at all?  The laptop was fine for quite some time and suddenly decided it was not a valid key.

  • This portion of the report states that there is not SLIC marker in the bios, either it wasn't there originaly and you were within the grace period, the bios was updated and the new bios did not have it or windows just doesn't see it. If activating with the key on the sticker worked you should be fine, if you experience problems again in the future then please resubmit a new report.

  • Aha!  That makes more sense now.  The manufacturer released a new BIOS to fix another bug.  I had updated the BIOS relatively recently.  I am willing to bet everyone with this laptop that updates the BIOS will run into the issue now.

    Thanks for the analysis!

  • Yep, just ran into this myself.  Unfortunately my product key is unreadable now since it is on the bottom of a laptop!
