Moving to a new computer

zaterdag 2 januari 2010 17:58Hello, I bought a copy of Windows 7 to install on a brand new Sony Vaio which had Windows Vista Pre Installed. After installing my retail copy of Windows 7, I realized that I was eligable for a free Win7 Upgrade from Sony. Well, I got the free upgrade and now I'd like to uninstal my retail copy of Win7 from my Vaio and install the free copy. I would then like to install my retail copy onto a desktop computer that I have. From what I've figured out from reading around is that I'll have to register the current retail copy via Phone? Now my real question is, Will I have to register Via phone everytime I reformat and reinstal in the future after I've done it once?

Hello Duane,
For Retail copies of Windows, you shouldn't need to have to Activate by Phone untill a number of computer changes (or a number of significant hardware changes...windows see it as the same thing). Reinstalling on the same computer should only need to be Reactivated over the Internet.
OEM copies of Windows always need to Activate by Phone.
Hope that helps,
