Reinstall Windows Live One Care on ID attached to a disabled email address and no idea of password!
-
maandag 19 juli 2010 18:28I have recently had to have Windows reinstalled on a laptop and have six months remaining on my Live Onecare subscription. However, reinstallation of the software won't complete without signing into the original ID and I have no idea what the password is and the email account is disabled. There is a link to uninstall a previous Windows ID so I can use a new one, but it fails when I try to run it. Does anyone have any ideas. I am loath to pay for new virus software having just forked out to get my laptop fixed. Not that the software exactly prevented the virus that caused the thing to break in the first place... I will obtain a free trial of something to keep me going for a bit, but if anyone knows how I can get round this issue I'd be grateful.

I personally suggest not bothering with OneCare at this point.
See this post for End of Life information for Windows Live OneCare - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecaregeneral/thread/81996436-edad-41ba-bdfc-02fc094e2ca9
Uninstall OneCare http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecaregeneral/thread/732e6371-2e71-479a-8cd6-b189941ed4fb, use the cleanup tool: http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/399071e2-49dc-4767-932d-d261e3965943/, and then download and install the free Microsoft Security essentials for malware protection - http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/resources.aspx
If you used OneCare for backups, you'll still be able to restore from old backups if you use the OneCare Restore tool - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecarebackupandrestore/thread/e5d686c8-762b-4b22-bc08-bfb93f911e57, but you'll need to seek an alternative backup solution.
