    Can I install just the x64 connector and use it to connect to my existing WHS install?

        I don't see why it woulnd't be possible unless the connector will rely on some 64bit code on the Server

            Changes were made to support the x64 connector on the server. You can certainly try it, but it's my impression that you're risking your backup database (at least) if you do. In addition, the connector checks to make sure that it's version matches the server, and complains if it doesn't.
