First 3 Days WHS

Just thought I would post about setting up WHS. Friday my eval OEM disk arrived. I was running a home server using windows XP. I opened the package and checked out the disks. I had been reading about how to set it up and the requirements. I have a dell dimension 2400 and two 500G USB drives.I saved all my stuff to the one drive and disconnected it and put it away for safe keeping. I unhooked the other from the computer. Put the disk in the drive and nothing. My fault I thought I had a DVD drive. Luckily my wife was in town and picked me one up, under $30. Took the old drive out and when she arrived home within 5 minutes I had the drive up and running. LOL Next it told me not enought RAM. No problem I have another computer removed it from there and installed in another 5 minutes and started install. I needed to upgade the RAM in the other computer, 1G about $30. The fun part is I only have dail up in my area. So I have a wireless network using a wifi. It is a dail up modem with a wireless router. It has a LAN connections, so I hooked my cable from the computer to the router.I put the disk in the drive and the install started. It took about an hour an a half to two hours. The install went great no errors.
Next I went to my computer to install the home server connector software.There started my first problem. No connection to server. I started running test on the server. Nothing. I checked online for a solution. I used my driver disk that came with the computer to make sure the drivers were installed. Nothing. About an hour is my limited so I moved to a new solution. I shut the computer down and installed the wireless card I had. Started it back up asked for the driver. I put the disk in the drive. It installed the drivers the icon in the task bar showed up and I was up and running. Went back to my computer and started the server connector software. It was an easy install.I then hooked one of the 500G drives back up.It was an easy format. Then I installed it on the next computer. I had to order the RAM so when it gets here will be able to set up my 3rd computer.
I started the process for the backups and the updates. Went to bed hoping when I got up on Saturday it would be backed-up and up to date. I got one, the computers were backed up, but the server did not update. I had to work with that a bit. It keep freezing up. Finally I got it to start the updates. that was 8am. I knew with the dail up would be awhile. At 4 pm I checked it was done updating. That was not to bad. I am use to it with the dail up.
The update install was easy, was able to do that from my computer on the console. It download IE 7 and I was able to watch that from the console. It said it needed to reboot so I clicked restart now. For some reason it didn't so I had to go to the server to do it. I hope the updates fixed that.
After the computer updated I had to update the the server connector software. That was an easy process. I thought I could do it remote from the server from my computer but it did not work I had to update it from the computers. I then got my 500G drive and connected it to my computer. I copied all my files from it to the server. There was a lot on it but the speeds were great, was done in about an hour.So far everything is really good.
I made sure the user accounts were all set up and running. I found when I shut the computers down and restart I have to log back in for the shared files. On the log in I checked the save but have to log back in. I hope Microsoft fixes this so the shared files will stayed lodged in. Next I needed to get my anti virus installed on the server. I thought this would be a good over night download. I am running Windows Live Onecare on all my computers. I was running it on my XP that I was using as the server. Went to the server went to Live Onecare for servers. My first real let down. I could not believe that Onecare would not work on WHS. I know this is just an over site and it will be avalable soon.
So far I like WHS. So today I order the OEM. I don't want to set everything up and loose it. I hope that Live Onecare will soon be avaliable and that as we use it MS will fix some of the small problems. I will post more as I use it.

This is the evening of my 3rd day. I found a couple of add in. AutoExit is a good add in that should be part of WHS. What would make it even better if you could remote all your compters. This should have been part of the package for the server. Makes it easy to take away the monitor, mouse and keyboard. So far all the operations run smoothly. I think this so far is a great tool. It just works in the back ground doing the work for me.

I have now had WHS for 3 weeks. Last Friday I got the OEM and did a reinstall. I got a lot of errors I did not unhook anything on the reinstall. I had to unhook everything and do a new install. Once that was done it was up and running.
But now I have a few things. First you need to have it wired, but everyone I know at home is using wireless. But all the business I know are wired. I am running the OEM on a Dell and I could not find any drivers for it at Dell or Microsoft. But I have WHS running wireless. So I am not sure about the HOME in WHS.
The next thing I found is I am using Windows Live Onecare on my 3 computers. But there is no Onecare for WHS. The Onecare on my computers backedup my computers and I could fix anything with them from my computer. WHS has seem to taken that over so that is a good thing.
The next thing I tried was hooking my printer up to the sever. I couldn't really find anything on it, except to just hook it up. I did that but I had to use the disk. So I had to remote it from my computer. But once I did that it was up and running. But there is nothing on the control panel for the printer.

Hi,
It's good to see you're getting the system up and running.
FYI, there is a lot of info regarding the whole WHS concept here, and here.
Wireless for a server is really a no - no. The chances of a 'drop-out', or an interruption are just so great, plus the speed is just not good enough for a server. Also note that you will not be able to restore a Client, if it's on a wireless connection. You will have to have a wired one for this to work.
You don't need to log back in for Shared Folders to work. It sounds as though you don't have your system set up correctly; perhaps your passwords aren't matching.
There is at present, only a couple of Virus products available for WHS, Avast is the first one that came to market. Most cannot run on the server, as they just don't recognise the disk structures etc. As of yet, OneCare isn't suitable for the server, and I'm not too sure if or when it even might be available.
The remote access to Clients is something that has nothing to do with the WHS Team, this is purely a marketing decision which is outside their control. However, there are third-party solutions available which allow this.
Anything either in, or connected to your server should have Server 2003 drivers - if at all possible. You can get XP drivers to work, but there are opportunities for nebulous errors down the road if you don't have the 2003 versions and do you really want what could well be your most important data being stored on an older computer with the incorrect drivers?
