how can I disassociate my email address from a windows live account I no longer use or have access to?

    The email address I use every day, for years now, has been meganady@gmail.com  At some point I must have associated this account with a very old hotmail account to which I no longer have access.  When I try to sign up for a windows live account with this email address, it says this account already exists.  But when I try to sign in with this account, it says no such account exists.  I asked on this forum about this and they said they looked it up and that the email address is associated with a windows live account.
  
    Is there any way to unassociate it with whatever account its associated with?  As I said, I must have associated it years ago, and I don't have any idea what my ancient hotmail account username or password is.
  
    Any help you could provide would be great.
