OneCare internet security
-
17 marca 2009 21:35I used OneCare to set up security on my wireless system at home. It uses an old Linksys cable modem and wireless router.
OneCare required that I attach on of my computers to the router via an ethernet connection. I chose to use my desk top for this.
Ever since, I can access the internet on my notebook computer just fine, but my desk top computer can only access the internet if I have it attached via an ethernet connection. When I unplug the ethernet connection and try to use the wireless network, which worked fine for several years before this issue cropped up, it indicates that I am receiving a signal just fine, but it can't get a code from the router so I can't actually get to the internet.
I used a USB flash drive to set up my notebook computer and after I encountered this problem I tried to use the flash drive to set up my desk top as well. I even uninstalled and reinstalled Onecare. I've tried several other things all to no avail.
I need to be able to use the desk top on the wireless network because I have a cable modem and no cable outlet in my office. Right now it's connected by a long wire running down the hall and across two rooms. (needless to say, this can't be permanent)
The wireless connection works fine on the notebook and the ethernet works fine on the desk top, but why can't I get the desk top portion to work?
Help!!!

On the laptop open One Care>Change Settings>Firewall>Advanced Settings>Network Connections>Details and you will be able to view the network key. Copy the key, go to your Desktop, right click the wireless icon in the notification area, select view available wireless networks, select your network, when asked for a network key enter the key you copied from the laptop.

If you set up the wireless security on the desktop PC, then the dialog on the laptop won't show the network key.
You should be able to see the key by following Jim's steps on the desktop *except* if you reinstalled OneCare on the desktop.
My suggestion at this point is to reset your router security manually, either by following the router manufacturer's instructions for a reset (usually a button to be held for several seconds on the back of the router) or by following the manufacturer's instructions for connecting to the router via a web browser (over a wired connection) and manually configuring the wireless security. You will then need to manually configure the wireless settings on the desktop and laptop to match the router settings. What bothers me about the problem you encountered is that you used the same flash drive to configure the wireless settings on the desktop, but that didn't work.

25 marca 2009 02:24Thanks for the suggestion. I have done this and the desk top computer indicates that it's connected to the router, but it still can't reach the internet. I've walked through the set-up for the router with the linksys wizzard and ended up with the same problem. My desk top can access the internet if I don't encrypt the wireless network, or it can reach the internet if I connect through an ethernet cord.
However, if I activate encryption, and I've done it manually and with flash drives several times and checked and rechecked to be sure the key is entered correctly, but all to no avail. It just won't connect. If I use the repair tool in XP it indicates that it can't get an up-dated IP address, yet the notebook works just fine.
Any other thoughts? Suggestions are really welcomed!! -
25 marca 2009 02:31I don't have any problem connecting the notebook computer. The key works fine. It's the desk top that I can't get to connect when I use encryption on the wireless network.
When I disable the encryption, both my desktop and notebook connect to the wireless network just fine. When I enable encryption the desktop icon indicates it's connected, but I can't get to the internet. When I run the diagnosis or repair tools, I get a message that says that the IP address can't be up-dated.
I've set the system up using the OneCare wizzard, the XP wizzard and the software that came with the Linksys router. All resulted in exactly the same problem.
I've had the WEP keys assigned automatically then transferred via a flash drive as well as manually and I've selected the keys manually and transferred them both with a flash drive and manually. I've checked very carefully to be sure that the key being used is the same on both computers and the results are always the same.
I can connect with the notebook, but not the laptop when encrypted and I can connect with both if I don't have the network encrypted.
Any other ideas are really welcome!!! -
25 marca 2009 15:40ModeratorHi, Gary S28.
It sounds like you've done everything correctly, yet the dektop isn't receiving its IP address via DHCP when the network connection is using encryption. I suggest that you contact OneCare support for help with this.

A simple solution would be to reset your router to factory default and then following the router instructions for configuring security manually on each of your devices to match what you set up in the router.
OneCare simply configures the security for you when you are using a compatible router. You need to configure the devices to match what OneCare set up. To see the security key that OneCare used, you can open OneCare on the PC used to configure the security and click change settings/firewall. The wireless security information is within. It will not appear on other PCs that are part of yoru Circle.
