Bug: Erroneous notifications
-
sexta-feira, 4 de julho de 2008 19:01Hi,
Please take a look at this screenshot: http://cid-550f681dad532637.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Misc/mesh%7C_timings%7C_error.jpg It was taken a few minutes ago on 4th July.
Notice a few things. The file in the folder has a last modified date of 12:03AM yesterday morning. This tallies with the lower of the two circled notifications in the sidebar. BUT, why is the other notification message there saying that I updated the file at 6:24 this morning? I only access from Mesh from one machine so obviously (from the last modified date on the file) that message is erroneous. Why is that? What's interesting is that I did OPEN the spreadsheet this morning, but as you can tell from the last modified date, I didn't save it.
More worrying still is that if I look at the folder on Live Desktop the list of notifications appears in a completely different order and with different timings. Take a look: http://cid-550f681dad532637.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Misc/mesh%7C_timings%7C_error2.jpg
Its really really confusing to see messages appear in a different order. Can you do anything about that?
Thanks
Jamie

I observed the same happening just a couple of days ago. Opening a spreadsheet (but NOT saving it) causes a notification in the folder sidebar syaing that I updated it.
This only seems to happen with Excel files and (unfortunately) I can't repro on demand.
I wonder if an auto-save function within Excel is causing a problem (I'm no Excel expert I'm afraid)?
Has anyone else seen this happen?

quarta-feira, 9 de julho de 2008 18:09Hi Jamie,
Unfortunately (for Live Mesh notifications) Excel writes to the file when opening it. We currently pick this up as ‘file changed’ which then causes the News notification “XXX changed foo.xls”, so that's what you're seeing.
Sorry for the confusion,
Ben. -
quarta-feira, 9 de julho de 2008 18:21Hi Jamie,
Incidentally, since you think the issues may be related, I've been talking with various team members about the concerns you raised in this thread, and I'm hoping to get someone who knows more than I do about this particular area to come in and post a reply there.
Thanks for your patience,

The real problem comes when a person that is sharing the file with someone else opens the xls for the purposes of viewing and then their friend doesn't understand why, later on, they get a conflict. And then they argue and fall out (we did :) )

Thanks for the info Ben.
Mind you, it doesn't explain why in this screenshot: http://cid-550f681dad532637.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Misc/mesh%7C_timings%7C_error.jpg?wa=wsignin1.0 the last modified date on the file tallies with the less recent notification. Oh my head's spinning.... :)
