VSS not working – WinW2k8 x64

    Pergunta

  • I have problems with my server running Window 2008 x64 enterprise and SQL2005.  I have been having problems with VSS and when I run “vssadmin list writers” it does not list anything.  I found some help for reregistering the DLL’s, but some did not work (see below).

Can anyone help with some info on repairing VSS as I have found very little information on the net

    Thanks, Steve

    net stop vss
    cd %SystemRoot%\system32

  • The info was for 2003. but it still gave me the answer (but a few errors along the way).  The blog at http://blogs.technet.com/asksbs/archive/2008/04/23/troubleshooting-vss-and-backup.aspx was what got me back up and running.   For some reason we had a bad entry in the regestry.

    we should have had:-

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\EventClasses\{FAF53CC4-BD73-4E36-83F1-2B23F46E513E}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

    Value Name: TypeLib
    Value Type: REG_SZ
    Value Data: C:\Windows\System32\eventcls.dll

    What I had was:-

    Value Data: C:\\eventcls.dll

    Thanks again for the help

  • First check the Windows Event Log for any events pertaining to VSS:

    wevtutil qe System "/q:*[System[Provider[@Name='VSS']]]" /f:text

If that yields no results, you can enable VSS debug tracing as documented here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887013

The commands to do such as are follows:

    net stop swprv
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceFile /t REG_SZ /d C:\trace.txt /f
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceLevel /t REG_DWORD /d 0xffffffff /f
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceEnterExit /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceToFile /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceToDebugger /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceFileLineInfo /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /v TraceForceFlush /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

After this has been done, use VSS as had previously been done until the issue is reproduced.

    Then issue the following:

    net stop VSS
    net stop SWPRV

Tracing can then be disabled by issuing:

    reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Debug\Tracing /f

Additionally, information regarding VSS and SQL 2005 titled, "SQL Server 2005 connectivity and Volume Shadow Copy Service," can be found here:
