I bought a computer on craigslist and need to format off the pirate copy that is on the PC. I receive a validation message and can't get paste that. I just want to do a clean format for a clean install.

    Hello golfforfood,

If this is a name brand computer, go to the manufacturer's support pages for this model to see what the recovery procedure is.

If not a name brand, ask in the appropriate forum here:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

    Good Luck! :-)

They are Dell's. There are no disks. Not too old but we bought 3 for the kids off craigslist and we need to format off xp and put a real copy of xp on. Thank you.

    Hello golfforfood,

Since these are Dells, my original advice stands:  "If this is a name brand computer, go to the manufacturer's support pages for this model to see what the recovery procedure is."

Depending on the year of the PC most Dell computers have a recovery partition which includes the OEM software which will save you the trouble of having to try an obtain the physical media from Dell. Go to Dell's support site for more information on how to access the recovery partition on your PC.
