    Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003:
    Validation Failed

The product key used to install Office is not valid. It has been identified by Microsoft as a false key used with counterfeit copies of Office.

I purchased a brand new Dell desktop and also purchased Office 2003 directly from Dell.  Software received less than 2 weeks ago.  I find it difficult to believe that Dell would be selling counterfeit software.  They directed me to Microsoft.  I've went through your online diagnostics and all passes on my browser settings, but validation says it fails.  The error message, above, says "Standard Edition", but I have the Student Teacher Edition.  Does that mean anything?  What can I do to quickly rectify the situation?

Also, I went through how to tell if the CD is genuine, and it all appears perfect.  I keep seeing notes about taking back to seller, but if I received counterfeit software from Dell, then this could be a big problem for Dell.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

The problem is not with activation. The activation occurred without incident.  It's the Genuine Office Validation that fails.

    Any other ideas?

Run the Office Validation Assistant: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/office/default.mspx

If validation fails, you'll see a notice (in red) stating why it failed validation.  Post that reason as a reply to this thread.

This computer has failed validation. Expand for details.

Below are the results of the latest validation attempt. If any of the Microsoft Office software installed on this computer fails validation, the computer cannot qualify for the benefits of genuine Office.

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Office Genuine Advantage\data and delete the data.dat file, then reboot.

Note, the Application Data file may be hidden, use Tools->Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder.
