hello, i thought il sign up as im worried and feel ripped off for 140 pounds. i got an update tonight and didnt know what it was so i visited MS and found my way to the validation section, i done the test and this is the result:
You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. The Windows product key installed on this computer is not genuine.
The Windows product key installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a non-sanctioned key generator. If Windows came pre-installed on your computer, learn how to get genuine below.
and
The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement.
Counterfeiters have been known to sell computers with Windows installed, all using the same product key, to unsuspecting consumers. If you suspect this happened to you, learn how to get genuine below.
If you have used this product key on more than one computer, you will need to purchase a new product key. Each computer must have its own unique product key.---- me again ---
iv had this copy of windows 2002 (xp pro with sp2 on cd) for a few years with no problems. after i bought it i even done a check on your site and all seemed correct.
is a copper colour waved edge hologrm disc with the inner 180 degree hologram (the whole disc is a hologram and everything checked out, it was sealed with a start here guide and COA sticker that also has a hologram on a silver strip.
its an unbranded OEM edition i bought from a computer mag with a motherboard CPU + ram, i had the option to assemble myself and save 50odd pounds.
i can no longer contact the vendor as i have lost recipt and no longer have the mag i orderd from :(
one thing that springs to mind im unsure if i regesterd this XP when i 1st installed coz i still was useing a packard bell win98se comp online, could this be a problem.
im not to fussed over not being able to access the validate download section my main concern is the fact i may be using a dodgy copy of windows that i payed full price for. i feel ripped off :( , i could have spent 5 pound on a illegal CD-ROM copy from a car boot sale, but u cant beat being and knowing your legit.
any help on this matter ,, thanks :(

just to comfirm, iv gone over the checks and all seems genuine , hi-res hologram, microsoft switches to genuine viewable from both sides of CD, scratch my nail accross the edge and cant peel a sticker, all seem correct, COA is ok also the print of the start here guide is a pro job,
im thinking as im in the UK should i be checking validation on a UK site or something...

Mr confused:
I'm sorry for the trouble you're encountering. Yes, we've done quite a bit of research into Product Key generators, hacks, workarounds, and other methods which non-legitimate companies try to pass off non-genuine Windows to unsuspecting customers.
If you have a high quality counterfeit, you may qualify to recieve a free copy of Windows. I would recommend heading to http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/Reporting_FAQ.mspx and reporting this software piracy, as it will help genuine local PC builders in your area as we work on stopping software piracy.
Are you sure the current Product Key used on your computer matches your Certificate of Authenticity? (COA) If you feel that you have a genuine copy of Windows, I would recommend first verifying that your Product Key on your computer matches the COA you have. If it does not match, reinstall your copy of Windows so the Product Key matches the COA.
I hope this helps,

I'm sorry to hear that. In order to really recieve the benefits of a counterfeit reports, Microsoft needs as much information as possible. :(
If you run through the validation failure path again, you will eventually (at the end of the road) find information for contacting local support personelle in your area (UK, I assume). They will be able to help you directly by phone or email to finding your machine's exact Product Key.
I am unabe to provide that level of support over textual reference on the forum.
Please note, there are also tools out on the internet that will enable you to read your Product Key on your machine. These tools are not guaranteed to work by Microsoft, and are not guaranteed to work properly either. You may wish to choose this route instead of contacting local support personelle in your area. One tool that we know of is "Magical Jelly Bean" Key Finder.
I do *NOT* recommend posting your Product Key here on the forums. Just verify that it does or doesn't match your COA, and we'll go from there :)
Good luck! If you need anything else, let me know.

We have developed a tool that will allow you to determine if the Product Key on your system matches the COA on your computer as well.
Please check http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and verify that the last few digits of the Product Key on your system match your COA. Do *NOT* post your information on this public forum, as it may be used inadverdently.
