Used to be a legal key...?

My computer is two years old, which means that I recieved it two years ago; not that the hardware is anywhere near new.

My dad had his friend turn our old Dell PC into a computer with semi-new hardware, and, more importantly, Windows XP Pro instead of 98SE. I assume that my dad's friend used a legal key, because a.) he's a professional computer builder and b.) he had to register the software to begin with. Yes, I know that there are ways to circumvent the process of registering your key when installing Windows, but this guy used legal keys...I was able to get Windows Updates for awhile!

Now, for some reason, my key seems null and void. It doesn't pass the WGA verification test, and I haven't gotten any good updates for awhile.

Is there any way I can get compensation for this? I have an uncle at Microsoft and I could get a cheap XP Pro code through him, but I'd rather save my money for Vista. I just want a complete, legal XP Pro in the meantime...

And no, the guy didn't include the XP CD. I'm thinking he may have used a volume license.

According to the results of your WGA Log, someone installed an unathorized "Volume License" version of Windows XP Professional. Volume Licenses are only generally available to companies and not individuals. This explains why your VL version of Windows XP is not considered "genuine".

Volume Licenses are only available for mostly corporate use and are not for sale as a retail item.

Can you verify that your COA matches your Product Key? If it does not, the same advice (given above) will follow:

1 - Reinstall WIndows so your COA matches your Product Key (install using your COA as the Product Key) - This is the preferred method by Microsoft, as it will be a fresh copy, void of potential hacked binary files and security loops that may have been created to bypass WGA. We know this is usually not the user preference, but it is the safest method.

2 - WGA is underway to create a tool that will allow you to switch your current invalid/non-genuine Product Key being used to your COA sticker *ONLY*. There's no slated timeline, but it will be soon. This will allow you to change product keys being used without a reinstall.

HOWEVER, if it DOES match, I suggest taking the media back to the reseller (best buy?) to resolve the problem, or filing a Counterfeit report with Microsoft. If the report is of high quality media, you may qualify for a free WGA kit. Otherwise, you can purchase a WGA kit directly from Microsoft.
