My HP desktop, using Windows 7, had to rebuild. Made Money 2005 back-up files on an external hard drive, have also the regular memory stick back-up. Re-installed Money 2005 (OEM version which is part of Microsoft Works Suite 2005) and trying to import the back-up files. Thus far without any success, the message comes back "Can't import file", with the add on "Please confirm that you have the correct file.
Any suggestions

The version installed by your disk needs an update to be able to read the data file. After the update do not import the backup files: just open the latest copy of your .mny data file. Use the update file to install at any later date. The update files are self-contained installation files.
If you are in the UK, update your Money 2005 installation with http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26915.
If using the International English version, update with http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26922.
If you are in the US, install Money Sunset http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/athome/microsoft-money.aspx.

I installed Money Sunset (US) My latest copy of my Money datafile ends as ".mbf" and is not accepted (message "can't import file"). Do you have any other suggestions?

Sunset will not import a US Money 2005 bkf file. The data file formats for Money 2005 and Sunset are different.
Sunset would read and convert a US Money 2005 .mny file. It would also import a Sunset bkf file, if needed.
You need a copy of your Money 2005 .mny data file. The updates required after a reinstallation of US Money 2005 are no longer available. (See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320193.)

Dominic ~
I have been struggling with this problem for a month now. I have US Money 2005. Computer crashed when I tried to install a MS update. I was able to retrieve all my files including photos thanks to a Brit on YouTube! In the last post when Peter said he converted his data file to .mny I was excited to try this. My question is: How do I convert my .mbf file to .mny? Renaming just sounds too easy! Thanks for all your help!
