I have a client that is using MS Project 2010 and Sharepoint Server (not sure which version). They want to be able to have more than one person working on a MS Project 2010 file at the same time. Is this possible? If so, how do they go about it?

    Hello IC Consultant,

I'm sorry -- that is not possible with Project.  Only one person can have read/write access to a file at a time.

The only way to do concurrent editing in MS Project is to divide the schedule into sub-projects, each with its own schedule, then integrate these into a master schedule.

Users will then be able to work on individual sub-project schedules concurrently, while the master schedule can be used to give a view of how the components all fit together.

You can't do this in Sharepoint (at least not without an additional Webdav client) as project doesn't like linking to web folders, but it can be done on a shared network drive.

However, linking schedules increases the risk of file corruption, so you would only do this if it wasn't going to be possible to work from a single file (i.e. if you had a team of project planners/PMs, who spent most of their time working on the schedule - as opposed to occassional users).

    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi IC Consultant,

As Julie said, this is not possible. When a user opens a project plan, the tool set up lock on that plan on user's credential, so unless he updates and save followed by procedural closing of the plan lock persists.

No other user can open it in WRITE Mode unless its in locked state, but it could be opened in Read mode. Once the lock is released i.e. plan is "Checked-in" in language of the Server, it becomes available for Read/Write access. Simultaneous edits are not allowed based on the Standard process of managing data consistency, preventing over-write and corruption.
