The client I'm working with have a status report format that they use and would like to maintain this format, is there a way the status report feature in Project server can be modified to have tables and/or indicators

It would probably be a lot of work. From playing with a similar concept,
you may be better off using InfoPath, SSRS and/or native SharePoint functionality.

I've seen a SharePoint List used to collect updates (which can even be done
via incoming e-mail). Then on a weekly basis aggregate that list into a
status report in InfoPath or SSRS. In another section on the same report,
you can pull critical task data, and you're there.
