Is this a problem with my hardware or is something wrong with the DVD media that I am installing the Windows Home Server software from?

If you encounter any of the following problems during Windows Home Server setup the cause is almost certainly a problem with your setup DVD, your DVD writer, your DVD reader, or another hardware problem with your server computer.
- Blue screens during setup.
- "Unable to initialize UI subsystem" errors.
- Out of memory errors.
- "Error installing XXXX" where XXXX is anything.
- Setup fails in pretty much any other way.
Windows Home Server setup has been extensively tested. Every setup failure we have seen has been related to either a problem with the setup DVD or a hardware problem. If you encounter failures during setup please do the following:
- Verify that the setup DVD is not faulty by using a CheckSu utility. You can do this by running the mscdcrc.exe utility (downloadable from the download area on Micosoft Connect) against your DVD (e.g. "mscdcrc422.exe d:").
- If you have burned your own DVD verify the following:
  - The DVD writer and the DVD reader are both compatible with the DVD media you are using (e.g. DVD-R used in a DVD+R drive may not work).
  - Your server computer's BIOS supports booting from DVD-ROM. Many older BIOS do not support booting from DVD-ROM. Updating the BIOS on your computer to the latest version may fix this.
  - Your DVD reader has the latest firmware. We have seen many cases where an older DVD reader requires updated firmware before Windows Home Server will install correctly.
  - You have burned your DVD using a DVD writing utility that supports verification.
  - You have burned your DVD using at 1x speed.
- Your server computer must have at least 512MB of RAM available (some onboard video adapters use system memory; if you have this type of system change your BIOS settings such that the video adapter uses the minimum amount of memory possible).
- Test your system memory with an exhaustive memory test application (e.g. http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp).
- Verify you do not have some other sort of hardware problem.

After Doing the following, I still get the BSD w/ Technical information: STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF789EA94, 0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
- Verified the setup DVD is not faulty w/ mscdcrc422.exe tool w/CRC value being 8x8F7459EA
- Burned the DVD using 1x speed w/verification
- DVD reader has the latest Firmware version available
- Validated the video adapter in the bios does not use any system memory.
- Validated that the computer BIOS supports booting from DVD-ROM (Have installed other OS's on this machine w/o any issues.)
- Ran the memory test w/o any issues.
Machine Configuration:Dell Precision 390

DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 1GB, 667M, 12X72, 8, 240, 2RX8
CARD (CIRCUIT), GRAPHICS, 128, FX550, ELGA10, LEAD FREE

INSTRUCTION, DEVIATE CHAS L6 TO L5.5
ASSEMBLY, DVD+/-RW, 16X, IDE (INTEGRATED DRIVE ELECTRONICS), HITACHI LG DATA STORAGE
HARD DRIVE, 160G, S2, 7.2K, 8M, LEAD FREE, SGT-TNK

The CRC utility you mention above (quoted here)

Does not seem to be available.

I had a "grey screen" failure before the first reboot during the install this morning. The screen was pure grey (without words or icons) and had only the cursor on it. The cursor would still move, but there was no HDD activity for several minutes. I ended performing a ctrl-alt-del and chkdsk ran on reboot. The installation seemed to proceed fine after that.

I have confirmed the CRC value is correct, and burned several times on different brands of media at varying speeds - all with the same outcome - that is:

WHS goes through the installation process fine, but when it does the first reboot, the DVD begins the whole process again; starts from the beginning, installing the installation files, product key, EUA, format, information screens while copying/installing etc etc.

What do you think the problem is here? Any advice would be appreciated as I just seem to be going around in circles - again and again and again. Ahhhhhh!

Hi all, I'm just trying to install Windows Home Server, but after copying the file the install doesn't do anything. I can see the Vista-like wallpaper, but nothing happened.

I have checked the DVD iso, the DVD itself, the memory, but I can't find the problem.

Can someone help me ?

I have encountered the "Could not initialize UI Subsystem" message, so I was going to use the mscdcrc422.exe to verify the DVD, but, unfortunately, I cannot find it on the Microsoft Connect site. The downloads for this beta doesn't list the utility. Using Search only brings up this thread! Is it possibly downloadable under one of the other Connect sites?

I was unable to track down the mscdcrc utility to check the ISO downloads. Using MS Live Search and Google the only reference to it was your posting (OT: amazing - you should get some award). I was also unable to find a generic download section in MS Connect. With all the talented programmers out there I do not like the idea of downloading a free version from the Web. It would be too easy to insert code designed not affect the CRC during the checking process. I had CRC checking software for the XP and 2003 Server Betas but I deleted it because I assumed that MS would put CRC verification in their downloads. I cheated and ordered a WHS DVD through the mail but I still would like to burn my own DVD and CDs. Where can I find a certified product for verifying the CRC?

Why doesn't my earlier post asking for help and Paul's post also asking for the location of mscdcrc.exe appear on the Forum?

Is there a way to access these forums using the Newsgroup feature in Outlook Express. It is both easier to use and has more features. I tried but could not connect to "forums.microsoft.com".

I'm having blue screens after the reboot when the key has been entered. The message says about removing any new devices or using check disc on the hard drive.

Any suggestions? Also can you post a link to mscdcrc.exe? having trouble finding it.
