The error you got apparently means"Error code hr = 0xC004FE00,The Software Licensing Service reported that activation is required to recover from tampering of SL Service trusted store."
Please download and install the KB971033 update for windows - it will assist in diagnosis.
    Please also
visit the Validation site, and attempt to validate Windows

then repost with a new copy of your MGADiag report - hopefully we'll be able to see exactly which files are affected. (The file Mismatches above simply tell us that the KB971033 WAT update is not yet installed)

  • This was a clean oem build and i've been using the laptop fine for 6 months. i've not made any changes to the activation process. I thought an OEM would auto bypass the activation as they tend to build with a bios feature set to allow you to just get on with using your PC. now that it's asking to verify i've put the OEM key in that was stuck on the base unit but this does not work. also, as i said earlier, i tried the calling the activation line and the code they gave me did not match the key installed. (this was the mesage displayed when i tried to enter it)

    Any thoughts?

    8 august 2010 19:13
  • Yes, that's where I got the key from. It's a genuine HP netbook with a genuine OS and OEM certificate
    8 august 2010 19:22
  • Hi Vegan,

I also said i've done this already, i've tried the phone activation and i spoke to a rep on the phone the code does not work.

Please have a look at the start of my blog as i've put all the actions i've tried to date.

    8 august 2010 19:30
  • Yes, we spoke for 30 mins trying to work out why the code would not work. I was advised to call MS support or HP for assistance.

are you able to decode the diags logs that i've posted?

The KB971033 update was not installed properly - but it is now - the file mismatches are gone.
You would appear still to have not visited the Validation site - please do so.

Unfortunately, the 0xC004FE00 error is still there.
You can try using the System File Checker to repair any damaged files (but I'd be happier if we knew which they were before attempting that)....Click on the Start button
    type in the Search  box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
     - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC   /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot
Visit the Validation site  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and attempt to Validate Windows - again, make a note of error messages.
    Reboot.
Run MGADiag again, and post the report, and error messages in your reply.

    Hi Noel,

After running the integrity file check it completed without any errors. i.e. windows did not find any problems with the protected files.

here's a new copy of the diag's but with the same errors. :(

As you say - same error :(

I think we're going to have to wait for Darin to check out the report, and see what he has to say - his tools will be able to tell him a lot more than the bare report tells us.

One thing that would be worth trying would be to rebuild the Licensing Store - again :)
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on the found CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

     Reboot

Once complete, please attempt to Validate Windows again, then run MGADiag again, and post the report back here

  • Hello ND2010,

I have checked the Product key and it is a valid and genuine COA SLP key for Windows 7 Starter.

If you still see the Non-Genuine messaging after trying the steps provided by Noel (above), would you go to http://microsoft.com/genuine and click the Validate Windows button, what does it return?

-If the result was Genuine, do you now still see the Non-Genuine messaging within Windows?

-If the result was Non-Genuine, provide the full message that the Validation page gave you.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS
