Guy's I have been given an old Toshiba portege m100 laptop with a dead hard drive. The product key sticker is for windows XP Pro1 -2CPU / Toshiba is still intact. How can I tell if the key is still good for this machine, as the laptop has a chequered history someone else may have used this key and if I try to use it I may get rejected. Of course I would have to have bought a new drive first so I'm juggling with the cost of a drive only to be disappointed not being able to load an OS.
Is there somewhere I can enter the key and PC serial number to check validity ?
Cheers
Mick McScrooge.

Hello Mick McScrooge,
There is no publically accessible place to enter the product key to check for validity.
Contact Toshiba to see if you can order recovery discs--that would sidestep any issues revolving around that checkered history. https://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/serviceUnitVerification.jsp
If no joy, try www.restoredisks.com.
If still no joy, then you can use a systembuilder/oem hologrammed Microsoft Windows XP Pro installation disc. DO NOT use anything downloaded from the internet, these are usually laced with rootkits, malware, and viruses.
