25 august 2009 19:46While manually checking the Microsoft Update WebSite for the latest updates I was offered the above update along with wo others. The other two downloaded and installed correctly, but KB949810 downloaded okay but failed to install, giving error code 0x80070643.
I searched on this web site and elsewhere and was advised to turn on verbose logging which I did, but in all honesty it meant little to me.
My main question is why I am being asked to validate Microsoft Office when I do not have a copy of this on my computer genuine or otherwise ? I do have - apart from Windows XP Professional with SP3 - Visual Basic, C# and C++ Express Editions along with SQL Server 2008 but not any edition of Microsoft Office.
If you need any more information please let me know.
Thanking you in advance
EDIT: I reviewed my update history and I have discovered that Microsoft Update has installed The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2), Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB967642) and Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System Help for Common Features (KB963673). I also have Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition installed.

As an edit to the above, I reviewed my Update history and have discovered that Windows Update has installed The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2), Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB967642) and Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System Help for Common Features (KB963673). I also forgot to mention that I have Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. Perhaps this explains this, but if I do not have a full copy of Office is this update always going to fail.
Perhaps it's not something I should worry about.

Thanks for your reply.
I did as you suggested and got the following message:-
Problem: No Office products eligible for validation were found on this computer. This may be due to one of the following:
- The version of Office installed on this computer is earlier than Office XP.
- There are currently no Office applications installed on this computer.
- The version of Office you are using is hosted on another computer or a terminal server. Read more about this in the FAQ.
As I said I do not have a copy of Office installed, AU has installed the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) I'm guessing because Web Developer Express requires it.
I did also try to install KB949810 again from the Microsoft Update website but again no luck.
I was mainly interested to know why I was offered a high-priority update for software I do not have, but perhaps I can just ignore this one.

As far as Microsoft Genuine Advantage is concerned, if you don't have Office installed, you should not be offered the Office MGA update.
I think the better question is why is Microsoft Update offering you Office related Updates when you don't appear to have any Office products installed? I recommend going to the Microsoft Update support page at http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527#tab0 . There is allot of information there, but if none of it answers your question, click the link in the upper right of the screen (right under "Get Help Now") and it will take you to (free) Microsoft Update Live support.
Sorry I couldn't be more help,

Thanks for taking the time to try and solve this mystery.
As I said above, I guess it's the Office SP2 that's flagging up the need to download the MGA on the Microsoft Update site and I'll try the link to their support page as you suggest. With any luck I won't have been the first person this has happened to and they will have an answer.
The fact that Office MGA won't install isn't causing any problems at my end as far as I can see and it's more of a puzzle than anything.
Thanks once again and best wishes
28 noiembrie 2010 01:13I am just wondering, is this THE David Gilmour from Pink Floyd? I am a HUGE fan but most people my age think that kind of music sucks. I am only 14 and this Monday, my dad is taking me to see The Wall Live!!!!!!!!!!! If this is really THE David Gilmour, you are my guitar idol!!!!!!

Hi Jordan,Sorry I'm not that David Gilmour. Still at least it wasn't my son desecrating the cenotaph last week ;-).
Hope you enjoyed the concert anyway.
