windows home server (original) cant run console

I cant get it to run the server console, I believe that the data on the disks isn't in a format that can be read if I pull the disks out?
Can anyone confirm that?
I can boot into the OS but it took a long time. I suspect the Boot disk is dodgy (or ram).
I just need to take a peek at the files before I scrap it.

it completely failed to work because my network cable was unplugged.
I would still like to know though if the disks can be read on another system - because the server is CRAWLING, its taking 15+ minutes just to open a 200gb backup
