Parental Control functions?

14 august 2007 09:59How about adding some Parental Control functions like.
- Website filtering.
- Internet usage control (amount and time of day).
That would make it even more useful in a home environment.

14 august 2007 12:16Hi,
Good idea, but the fact that WHS did not design to be as security appliance for your internet gateway or proxy.
If you suggestion regarding the sites filter for accessing your WHS server, then it easy to filter that in the web server, as well it already there with the login for users.
My best. -
17 august 2007 10:55Maybe my english is not so good. I will try to explain better.
What I meant was to add the same type of functions to WHS you would get from software like "Kidswatch" and others like it. If you install a Server at home why not add functions like this so you can keep it all in one place! instead of having to install and administer theese functions separately on each PC. It is a great Idea to have a Server at home, but you are not likely going to install more than one are you?

If you configure your clients to use OpenDNS you can block websites that fall into various categories e.g
Block lingerie/bikini sites
Sites displaying or dedicated to lingerie/bikini that could be considered adult-only.
Block nudity sites
Sites that provide images or representations of nudity.
Block pornography sites
Anything relating to pornography, including mild depiction, soft pornography or hard-core pornography.
Block sexuality sites
Sites that provide information, images or implications of bondage, sadism, masochism, fetish, beating, body piercing or self-mutilation.
Block tasteless sites
Sites that contain information on such subjects as mutilation, torture, horror, or the grotesque.
Block adult-themed sites
Sites that are adult in nature and are not defined in other rating categories. Note: This category should only be turned on if you want to be very restrictive on your network.
Enable phishing protection
By enabling phishing protection, you'll protect everyone on your network from known phishing sites using the best data available.
You can also block domains and set up whitelists ....

Is this something I can configure on the WHS or do I have to make theese setting on each client(PC)?

The DNS entry on each client PC needs to point to OpenDNS. If you have a DHCP service operating (normally in your router) this gives an IP and DNS entry to the client PC. You can change the DNS entry in the router to OpenDNS or manually configure the client PC's DNS entry that you want to have blocking in use.
You will need to set up a (free) username on OpenDNS, configure the blocking options and enter your IP as seen by the Internet. If you have a static IP that's all, but if you have a dynamic IP that changes everytime you connect (reboot the router etc.) you have to either manually enter the new IP provided, install a small piece of software that sends the new IP to OpensDNS or some routers have this facility built in (but needs configuring).

20 august 2007 11:21ModeratorI'll point out two things. One is that OpenDNS may interfere with name resolution on your internal network, as documented here and there in the forums (see e.g. this thread). The other is that if you're using your router's dynamic DNS client for OpenDNS it will be unavailable for another service like DynDNS or TZO. That's if your router even supports OpenDNS as a dynamic DNS provider.
