  Just as an update, certain certifications stay active ongoing, others will require a re-certification exam once every so many years such as those that focus on Cloud and Windows Phone technologies.  This is mainly because the tech updates rapidly and they seem to be product version independent ie targets Azure not Azure release April 2011 

  Older certifications will not retire per se just the technology that they are based on retire such as SQL Server 2000 etc..
