Sudden non-genuine warning after using legal XP Home for years
I had XP Home Edition pre-installed on my PC (from MESH computers). A while ago I updated to XP Home SP2 from the Windows Update site with no issues whatsoever. It has been running fine for a while now.
However, I turned it on this morning to find a message saying I am running a non-genuine XP. I know that my XP is a genuine version after conducting tests on the Microsoft website, and was wondering why this may have happened. I had a look around the net and downloaded MGADiag. The first time I ran it, it said that the verification couldn't take place (or similar).
So I used Lavasoft to do a spyware scan and deleted some low priority spyware (cookies etc.) After a restart it wouldn't load up. I tried again but using my Last Known Settings That Worked. This time, it started up fine. However, on the blue login screen that white box in the corner still said about XP. Once my desktop loaded, there was no icon in the System Tray and after running MGADiag again, it said that XP was genuine:

No that does not have anything to do with your situation, but let me ask.... Is the computer stating that you are non-genuine now?

I have had the same problem happen today.
I carried out a windows product key update and re-validated windows using the product key on the pc and this has worked to a point in that I am no longer getting the blue star and counterfeit message in the toolbar but I do still get the big counterfeit message and 'get genuine windows now/resolve later' option at the log in screen.
How do I get rid of this? Any ideas?

Now, it says nothing about being non-genuine. After that restart and choosing "Last Known..." all it had was that white box in the corner of the log in screen. I had a look around the internet and found a link to the online Microsoft validation tool. It said that my copy was genuine and validated. After that I could install updates again and run the PC just like before. There's no WGA icons in the system tray and no white box on the log in screen.
How did this happen? Nothing changed on my end as far as I know.
