Cannot connect client computers to WHS 2011

    คำถาม

  • I have a new WHS 2011.  I have tried from 2 XP PCs and one Windows 7 Ultimate.  When I open Internet Explorer and type in http://WHS/Connect eventually I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"  My WHS name is WHS.  Under Windows 7 I can go to Network & under other devices click on WHS and it will start the connection process.  There is no comparibly way in XP to see WHS.  From all three PCs I can ping the WHS fine.  I am running Microsft Security Essentials with the normal Windows Firewall.  It is OK if the IE process of typing in hhtp://WHS/connect does not work.  I just need a way for my XP PCs to connect.  In WHS v1 this was a very easy thing to do.  I can not find any connection Software buried on the WHS 2011.

Remote access works as I went off site today and connected in just fine.  All else on Server seems OK.

  • I have resolved this problem by copying the Connector Software from the WHS to a Windows XP PC.

  • Eventually you have misconfigured IP settings or something else on the client is blocking access. (Name resolution comes into my mind, i.e. DNS suffixes assigned by the router and pointing to any outside domain make the live hard.)

Could you enter ipconfig /all on one of your affected clients and the server and post the result here?

  • Instead of typing in the name of the server, use the IP address.  Additionally, I had to type in the port number for all of my Windows 7 and XP machines.  For example, if the server IP is 192.168.1.123, the address will be: http//192.168.1.123:65510/connect

  • I just tried from both an XP and a Windows 7 PCs.  And putting in the IP address did the trick.

When I would put http://192.168.1.77/connect in the IE Address bar and hit enter the address would change to http://192.168.1.77:65510/connect.  And then I would get that big green WHS screen.

  • I have them saved as files.  How can I post the info here?

  • Then there is something wrong with whatever does name resolution on your network.

  • Hi Frank,

you can copy and paste directly from the command prompt into a text file:

Click the system menu (left icon in the title bar) and select Edit/Mark.

Now you can mark a block with the mouse.

After you have selected all, this will put the selected stuff into the clipboard - from here you can paste it into the posting directly.

Alternatively in an open cmd prompt you can run ipconfig /all > info.txt, open info.txt from the current folder with notepad and copy/paste from there.

  • DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : gateway.2wire.net

This one could be the culprit.

If you search for WHS via DNS, this automatically attaches the extension. The router tries to find WHS.gateway.2wire.net - a name, which should be resolved by an external DNS server, which is in charge for that domain.

Depending from what that DNS server answers, there are different possible outcomes (i.e. not found or the IP address of a machine, which is not yours).

Which result is shown on the client, if you open a command prompt and enter the command

    nslookup

in that nslookup prompt you type

    WHS

    and in a second attempt

    WHS.gateway.2wire.net

Does it both refer to your server or point to something different?

  • In both cases the results are the same (WHS and WHS.gateway.2wire.net)

    Sever: home

    Address  192.168.1.254

    Name: WHS.Gateway.2wire.net

    Address: 192.168.1.94

             192.168.1.94
