ล็อกแล้ว Live Mesh on LAN

I've been wondering how live mesh manages synchronisation between two machines which are on the same LAN. Is the client software aware of the local network connection and able to synchronise using the LAN, or will it transfer everything via the live mesh site?

Hello Alex, Live Mesh ignores the LAN and always syncs over the internet.

There seems to be conflicting opinions about this - I have read elsewhere that Mesh is LAN aware, but requires access to the Mesh site to "control" the sync across the LAN.

As I understand it, the Live Mesh client needs to sign into the service, which means that it needs Internet access. If a folder is in the Mesh and set to sync with the Live Desktop, files will always sync there. Any device on the local LAN may sync peer to peer or it may sync via the Live Desktop over the Internet.
If, however, the Mesh folder is configured to not sync with the Live Desktop, it will sync via the local LAN using P2P.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Stephen, your post makes sense and it's how i thought it should work, but I wasn't absolutely sure.

    You're welcome.
One area that the Live Mesh team has mentioned needs improvement is the P2P sync, so I suspect that there are times when it does use the Internet to sync even when a direct P2P link via the local LAN is available.

The P2P sync *definitely* needs work.  The functionality used in Foldershare/Live Sync was awesome.  With Live Mesh it is terrible if not impossible to accomplish what foldershare could do.  It is very frustrating.  The sync with live desktop is reasonable but definitely not as fast as dropbox.

Since you are referring to Windows Live Mesh, not Live Mesh - www.mesh.com, you are in the wrong forum. Yes, the naming convention is confusing, though I like that they kept the Mesh name alive for the upgrade to Live Sync (formerly FolderShare).

For discussion of the new Windows Live Mesh (formerly Sync), (as well as the released Live Sync version) go here:
