Windows VISTA patch update issue

  Hi

  I have a Dell inspiron, preloaded with Windows VISTA (Home edition I presume).  I downloaded some patches last week (Using windows update) and after installing patches, VISTA failed to boot and gave me the core dump error message. 

  So I thought I'd do away with VISTA and started Installing WINDOWS 7 Ultimate (32 bit).  But somehow it succeeded in "Copying Windows file" step and failed when it was "Expanding Windows Files".  Now when i reboot the machine nothing happens and the VISTA is also not getting loaded.  Did I do something wrong or what?  I need some solution for this issue from WINDOWS experts :-)
