Academic Categories in Microsoft Academic Search

Below comes a general classification of academic research domains used in by Microsoft Academic Search to help users discover influential publications, authors, conferences, journals and organizations. We would like to remind all the users that such a classification is rather a reference than a strict ontology, since there is no consensus on how the universe of research should be divided, i.e. how many top domains there are, and to which top domains certain subdomains should belong. One subdomain may be linked to two or even more top domains. Take the biochemistry branch for example. While some consider it as part of biology, others may consider it as a part of chemistry.

Therefore, to resolve such dispute, we classified such subdomain to one of the possible top domains and marked it with an asterisk.

As human knowledge grows, we discover many new fields of study which are multidisciplinary, just like Biochemistry, robotics, etc. But I agree that we still need to have high-level taxonomy of disciplines for many reasons: Scoping of search results, restricting a person's interest, etc.

So, I thought all these should be under the 'Multidisciplinary' domain. But unfortunately there are no 'subdomain' under the 'Multidisciplinary' domain. Currently biochemistry is under Chemistry & not under Biology, but I feel that all these multidisciplinary domains should be subdomains of it.
