WHS 2003 PP3 Restore CD -Cannot Find Server

I am trying to restore my laptop running Win 7 Pro 32-bit using the restore CD and I keep getting an error stating that my server cannot be found. I did not use the standard "SERVER" name, but even when I enter the correct name manually, it still cannot be found. I have sifted through a variety of forums on the subject and have come across as iss with the VIA gigabit family of NICs (I have a Realtek RTL8 168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)). I have tried installing the drivers for the NIC card via flash drive, and my NIC does show up in the deteced hardware list, however when I check my router, my computer does not show up on the connected list. When I run my computer normally, it does show up on my router, and is able to connect to my WHS without any problems. Does anyone have any solutions that do not involve taking out my hard drive and installing it in another computer?

The FAQs I found all have to do with a bare metal restore. I do not want to have to take out drives or swap drives or add drives to restore my laptop. The WHS Restore CD does see my NIC as installed, however it does not actually connect to my network once I get back to the detect hardware page. I tried downloading the XP/Server 2003 driver and putting on a flash drive, but the Restore CD does not find any drivers on the flash drive when it "scans" it. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you.

Unfortunately Realtek NICs seem to have issues starting and connecting successfully from a WinPE environment (which includes the restore CD), so people with Realtek NICs have to jump through the right hoops, in the right order, to get everything to work.

19 กันยายน 2554 7:17Thank you for the clarification. I was having a hard time finding out what "bare metal restore" was reffering to. The couple of FAQ is could find discussed restoring using a different computer or NIC card, which is much easier for me to do with a desktop, instead of the laptop I am trying to restore. I am going to try Bulldawg's suggestion tomorrow, and I will report back on how that worked out. Thanks again.

20 กันยายน 2554 3:51I used the "enhanced" restore CD and everthing seems to be working (Thanks Bulldawg). I was able to discover my server and and begin the restore process. Apparently its going to take a few hours so I will check it again in the morning. Thanks again to everyone who helped point me in the right direction.

No problem, glad to assist. BTW, if you think you need any of the other tools from that site, you might want to go ahead and download them. His 2 Sept posts doesn't sound too encouraging for the site's future.

Thanks for the link to breakinghomeserver.com. After searching and tryomh for days I finally got a connection between my netbook and the homeserver. Shame for Microsoft and Acer by delivering thes poor recovery CD's. Compliments for Drashna who made the Xfiles editions version which was immediaetly OK.

This blog should get you to the info you need.
https://technocore.homeserver.com/blog/2010/01/xfiles-edition-server-installation-v1-5-5//
Get both the install and restore. The integrated drivers handle almost everything out there. None of my equipment, mostly Silicon Image and JMB Sata II controllers, have required an F6 install. Most Sata III controllers will require separate drivers, but there are instructions on the blog on how make your own DVD/CD/USB. The restore CD also has most of the missing LAN drivers that cause most client restores to fail with the regular restore CD.
Also, go pick up a copy of the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool from
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Not only will it do Win7, it will also do the X-Files iso, and the Win8 developers preview iso. It is quite a handy tool for put stuff on a USB install thumb drive.

I just ran into this with an Asus P7H55M-Pro motherboard with a realtek lan chip.
Another option is to just put the drive into another computer that already is hooked to the home server and run the client restore wizard from the
Program Files\Windows Home Server. I just poped the drive into a usb docking station and restored it that way...
