Általános vita New Install review

I have just now installed the Home server beta on a clean hard drive.  I incountered a probolem with the drive not being recognized on the first reboot during the first and second install attempts, but, made some ajustments to drive setup, then the 3rd install attempt worked fine. There are currently some errors in the Event viewer that I will be addressing as soon as I can install a screen capture so that I can document them properly.

I have been on the Windows LH server beta since it started in Dec.2006 for what I need to deal with at times in the course of my own business, however, the Home Server is more suitable for my personal needs and most average home users.

One question about reporting bugs.  Where do we report them?  And how do we provide documentation such as file attachments.  Is that permissible here in this forum?  If not, please advise me as to how to send those reports. I don't see anything in reference to that in the FAQ.

Thank you for the opportunity to be here.

    Jan :)

    Hey Jan -

Report bugs on Microsoft Connect at http://connect.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver. There are certain procedures you may want to follow when filing bugs - like using TALQ. For more information, read this:

    Thanks, Justin :-)

I am getting some errors that I would like to clarify, as I am not sure if they are ones that I need to address, or can be ignored.  I have screenhots of the ones in the Event Viewer to post. Otherwise, the server appears to be running very nicely.

Please post all/any bugs that you think shouldn't have happened. If it is just clarifiation, you may ask in this forum as well.

Installed with no problems on old PIII 1GHz 768 RAM machine with 1 80GB HDD and 1 60GB drive.

Connector installed and working fine on Notebook (WinXP Pro SP2)

Connector install not successful on Desktop (WinXP Pro SP2).  Got through the connection part, but errors on setting up backup.  "STRINGBUG No eligible volumes to back up.  WHS can only back up NTFS volumes...."

The desktop has 1 SATA HDD, 250GB partitioned into C:\  and D:\, and 1 external USB 250GB drive.  -- all are NTFS.  What gives.

On the server, the Desktop shows under computers, but OS is listed as "unknown."

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Connector, both from DVD and from Server.

    And I hate these forums!

    As a follow-up, here's what I've done.

    1. Connector works fine on notebook; both the Home Server Console and the shortcut to shares are working.

    2. Connector says it fails to install on desktop, but Home Server Console works from taskbar.  The shortcut to shares does not appear on desktop, so I created one.  Still a problem in that the Console shows the desktop in Computers, but lists OS as unknown.

    3. On my 2 Vista x64 machines, I created a desktop shortcut to the server shares.

As an FYI here, there's no reason to submit screen grabs of Event viewer entries, in fact, screen grabs of those entries are frequently problematic if the Description and Data sections of the entry covers more than what is visible in the Event Properties dialog box. A much better way to submit Event viewer entries is to open the entry, click the "copy" button (top right of the dialog box, below the up and down arrows), then paste the clipboard contents into a text file. This ensures that the entire entry is captured.
