Install with WinPE?

17 กุมภาพันธ์ 2550 10:19I've got a Dell 1u box that I'd love to be able to use for WHS but it is an older box and it won't boot from an external DVD and only has an internal CD drive. Is there anyway I can install using WinPE? I've tried running qs - autorun but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Never mind, lack of patience on my part apparently. It just took longer than expected for the install to begin.

Unfortunately the install never completed. When rebooting for the first time into what should have been the text mode install, I received an error; Disk read error. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.
Didn't matter what I tried to work around this error I couldn't get past it, so I became creative. I installed WHS into a Virtual Server guest with a single virtual SCSI hard disk the same size as the one in the box I was attempting to use. When the install was finished, I used Acronis Enterprise Server 9.1 with Universal Restore to snap an image of the virtual machine. Burned the image file to a DVD and then restored the image on to the physical server. Everything is working as expected now.
I'm going to bug this and also file a suggestion that since the hardware reqs seem to be targeted to older boxes that CD media be provided as an option along with DVD at release.
