Show/Hide navbaritem based on permissions

I need to add a link or a button to the Home navbaritem which will only be available to users with a certain set of permissions. Basically some users (executives for example) should be shown a link in the navbar on the left which when clicked will launch a report while the rest of the user shoud never see the link. Anyone done something similar and if so how do you go about it?

To clarify, are you refering the application navigation bar (i.e. that with the 5 areas - Workplace through to Settings), or the navigation bar on a specific entity ?
If it's the former then this can be easily achieved by editing the SiteMap and using the Privilege element to specify who can see a given SubArea

Yes. the item wil be shown on the Application navbar.
