已答复 Windows XP SP3

I see Windows XP SP3 has a "candidate" download. Is this the same as a "final version" or are we waiting for more? Also, I created a new Startup CD from my OEM original restore disks and "slipstreamed" SP2 into it. Can I follow the same procedure to "slipstream" SP3 into my SP2 disk so I have a single Startup CD again with everything up-to-date? (When I went to construct my "CORE" backup CDs from this SP2 startup, I spent quite a bit of time uploading over a 100 critical updates and a dozen optionals (like IE7 and Media Player 11). I am NOT a computer geek, but have been working with computers since 1969 (Navy, Commodore, Timex Sinclair, IBM XT, etc...) While I'm smart enough to learn, I get rather annoyed with "experts" yakking but not making themselves clear. Please respond only if you are patient and really want to help me learn and keep it simple. Thank you!

(Reply Addendum to my 1st msg) I just wanted to add that over the last few hours I have successfully "slipstreamed" SP3 into my previous SP2 Startup Disk and am now testing on "Windows XP Home Edition Ver 2002 SP3 v3264" and all is going well EXCEPT that previous visits to Microsoft Update informed me about updating IE6 to IE7 and Media Player 9 to 10 to 11. I visit now and get no such notice, so if I wasn't aware of this problem, I would not get updated on IE or Media Player (Big SP3 Boo-Boo). (For those of you interested, my original system was from E-Machine back in 2003 and only had SP1 on a ghost image restore OEM set. If you would like to know how I made the "clean" startup disk, you should visit Charles Hengs instructions under a Google search for "How to make a bootable XP startup disk from a pre-installed system" - very good. You may also need to check out a search regarding translating XP registration/license codes as E-Machine will show you your serial number but not startup lic#. I'd give you the actual web links to both of these, but on this IE6 I can only do one tab at a time - sheesh.) Anyway, onwards and upwards...

NO XP SP3 is not Final. It is still in Beta and has a built in Time Bomb, which means that it will stop working at the end of the Evaluation time. If you slipstream now, you will have to do it again when SP3 go's RTM.

Thank you. I sort of suspected that but I'm glad you let me know. What does "RTM" stand for? Any links or information on when XP support will terminate? When SP3 will be final? Why MS Update does not detect older IE or Media Player after installing SP3? When XP support stops, will IE and Media Player still be options (or should I back them up now)? I appreciate yours and any other input comments. Thanks.

    Panax,

SP3 RC1 at this time is a time limited pre-release software, and is for testing purposes. SP3 includes all previously released WinXP updates, including security updates and hotfixes, and select out-of-band releases.

SP3 is cumulative, so can be installed on top of WinXP SP1 or SP2. If you installed SP3 on top of SP1/SP2, you can uninstall SP3 at a later stage when the evaluation software stops, roughly at 180 days.

If you slipstreamed WinXP with SP3, you'll have to reinstall WinXP.

SP3 RC1 can be downloaded at this URL.

    @tarunkc90

There are quite a few people complaining about Windows Vista (as you might have noticed, already).

If you think about getting Vista you should see what reasons there are, either for or against it. I think, the decision depends pretty much on your "field" (how you use it and for what).

    For example:
    - Windows XP will have its last big update with SP3. That means two things: it supports a huge amount of drivers and devices but MS will decrease and eventually stop support and further development.

    - Windows Vista, on the other hand, is more like a young child There are quite a few bugs and lots of support problems. If you think about getting Vista, first check if all your (maybe expensive) devices and hardware is supported.

    - If you have a high-end-pc and you want to use directx 10 (e.g. for new games) you will need Vista because XP does not and never will support directx 10.

    - If you have a midrange pc and like to play on high settings but without directx 10 Vista is not the right choice for you because Vista needs more ressources than XP.

    - If you like fancy graphic-effects Vista is the right thing for you (you can disable those, by the way)

    - Vista is also said to be a lot safer than XP. However I can't really tell you as I haven't used it that long.

So, let me sum it up... There are lots of reasons for and against Vista. I have to say, most of the criticism I heard came from XP users who never actually saw / used Vista. Those who use it are pretty satisfied (obviously they've no problem handling a few bugs). Now, with the release of the first service pack (mid-april, i think), they've fixed quite a few bugs, i should think, and lots of manufacturers have fed their customers with new drivers. However there are still devices that are not yet (maybe never will be) supported or have limited function. As I said, check it first.

I have both OS installed right now because I was pretty sceptical myself and I had problems with it, that's for sure (but only one I couldn't solve and it was because of the rather aged devices I was trying to use, so I don't blame Vista). And if you install SP1 it should be a lot better.
I'd say, Windows Vista is not absolutely nessessary at this time as WinXP works fine. If you're cool with XP so far you can keep it until MS updated a few more things. But I have to say, I have not had one piece of criticism (of what I heard  before) confirmed.
So, as I said, "upgrading" to Vista is not absolutely nessessary but it's worth it.

I hope, I helped.. at least a little.

I've only just read this thread, and coincidentally, have just reinstalled XP on my home PC, so you may be interested in the following.

I had been running Vista Business SP1 64bit for a few months and was very happy with it apart from a few niggles - mainly I have some web authoring software that is not Vista compatible and I don't want to pay for an 'upgrade' when the version I have does all that I need it to. Vista 64 is stable, decently fast, has lots of eye candy (yes, I like aero and the sidebar), and in 64bit, the USB copy issue isn't so pronounced. In short, if my software had been compatible, I'd still be running Vista 64 despite my early suspicion and keen scepticism.

However, I also run Vista Business SP1 32bit at work, and SP1 *hasn't* improved the copy to & from USB stick performance problems - it is seriously slow! All of our corporate applications work fine, as do the usual utilities - antivirus, cd writer, etc. Given the choice though, I'd go back to XP at work too - purely because the file performance issue problem is a really big problem. IMHO I'd stay well clear of the 32bit version if your applications can run in a 64bit (or emulated 32bit) environment.

Downloaded the final version and ran it, it crashed in the middle and said access denied, then uninstalled, rebooted and told me it had partially installed and that xp might not work.  And it didn't do well.

I restored and rebooted without any services (msconfig) and retryed.  It did the same thing.

However this time when I went to restore ALL restore points were missing - this is just neato MS!  So much for setting restore points - why bother if MS is going to wipe them out.

    Any suggestions would be accepted!

Thanks Thomas, I was so disgusted with the mess I deleted the file.  I've been fighting problems with MS since November and they give no answers and suggest drivers that don't work and I'm just not up to messing with it right now.

After all of the mess I found my dvd burner would not burn a copy of the sp3 to cd for safe keeping.  After about an hour of messing around it seems the file has some sort of protection that won't allow it to be burned????

I have this thread address, may give it a go one of these days.

    Thanks again for your suggestions.

Just to add my two cents worth, from an end-user support standpoint which is what I do, the problems with Vista are not all Vista's fault. Vista is undoubtedly resource hungry and it does have its compatibility issues. However, vendors like HP and Dell build "bargain" PCs with Vista as the only OS choice using Celeron processors and 1 MB of memory. Such a configuration would be fine on an XP machine but Vista just won't run normally on such limited resources. Customers buy these "deals" and don't understand why their brand-new computer is slower than molasses in the arctic circle.

The OS is not as much to blame as profit-hungry companies and commission-hungry sales people. Ill- and mis-informed consumers are to blame as well. Wanting the latest and greatest comes at a high cost. It always has and always will.

As always, you get what you pay for.

I'll get off my soapbox now.  Thanks for letting me vent.

    Best regards,

    Jack

    Attn:  Thomas Lee

I got around to trying sp3 again.

    Attempt one
Went to msconfig and had it start with nothing:
sp3 Installs files, starts to update and stops.
        Access denied
Service pack 3 installation did not complete - click ok
XP partially updated and may not work.

    Attempt two
    Downloaded and installed suminaci.msi
I made the reset.cmd file and ran it.  While it was running there was a Red area in dos window that reported a ton of failed modifications -- 0. syntax errors 0.

    Sp3 installed perfectly.

My concern is the error messages in the reset.cmd dos window.  Should I be concerned with this.

You could look in the Service Pack log and see what was provoking the "Access Denied".

Paul, see the post from thomaslee to exscentric above.  He posted three threads to look through.

The one that fixed my problem was the one relating to downloading the suminaci.msi file from microsoft and the making of the file by copy pasting info into notepad.

    Good luck.

Can I follow the same procedure to "slipstream" SP3 into my SP2 disk so I have a single Startup CD again with everything up-to-date?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Has anyone else experienced LAN connectivity issues after sp3 downloads?

I could not access or workgroup server (we're in a small office) nor the printer.  I rolled back my system to the day prior to the sp3 dl and everything worked fine.  Yesterday, I was away from my pc and it did an auto update and restarted.  Once again I cannot connect.

Any suggestions, or has anyone heard of this occurring?????

I don't want to keep rolling back since that is a "no-no", but I don't know if sp3 is something my system needs.

After spending HOURS figureing out and over coming the Access Denied problem, I ended up having to roll back my computer with a system restore which took another hour, after delightfully finding out that once installed, SP3 TOTALLY disables my wireless and internet connection, and drivers. Spent a long time trying to fix my connection, only to get stuck with no DNS every time.

SP3 has cost me several hours of time, and seems to offer NOTHING valuable.  Up untill this point I would update my computer as I assumed there would be SOME intellectual value behind a project supported by Microsoft for one of its top selling platforms.

Seems that INFACT someone here has dropped the ball.  Huge.

DO NOT install Service Pack 3  Unless you thoughly enjoy troubleshooting your computer.

Yes you can slipstream sp3 into xp.  There are programs around that will allow you to image your hard drive after you get everything you want the way you want.  Acronis is one, not sure of the spelling.  They have a free version that is supposed to work well.  Norton has Ghost for a price and there are others.

If you don't like the "experts" maybe you should pay microsoft for their help and stay away from boards   That is kind of the way boards are.  I to cut my teeth on a timex and feel rather swamped by all the new stuff but thanks to boards like these I keep afloat.

I was relieved (somewhat) when I read your post about downloading the new SP3. I am having the exact same problem. Access denied and no internet connection. I have tried doing several system restores to no avail. Is this the only thing you did to get it working properly again or did you do something else in addition to that? HELP! I'm about to pull my hair out on this one. Any help would be much appreciated.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.  Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select Windows XP then select Windows XP Service Pack 3

Actually it's 2014 for XP.  That would also be for SP3 if it's the last SP.  "Support ends 24 months after the next service pack releases or at the end of the product's support lifecycle, whichever comes first."

Look closer: I did not state that support for WinXP SP3 ends on 14 Apr-09, I said that free installation and compatibility support for WinXP SP3 ends on 14 Apr-09.

Yeah I know.   That's why I said "it's 2014 for XP.  That would also be for SP3 if it's the last SP."  I didn't want anyone to get the impression that support for XP stopped in 2009.
